RPGs: The reason people do not sleep at night.

The Bottom Line Role Playing Games give hours of entertainment with their magnificent storylines/plot and proper character development. This is what people should know if they want to buy an RPG.
Reflection: I remember playing my very first Role Playing Game; it was Dragon Warrior for the Nintendo Entertainment system. The premise of the game seemed simple enough:
-Save the kingdom from evil forces.
-Save the princess.
-Destroy the source of evil that plagues the kingdom and restore peace.
It took weeks to beat Dragon Warrior. My character "died" numerous times when journeying throughout the game without saving my progress. There were times where it seemed the game couldn't continue any farther.
It was one of the best video games I've ever played.
Role Playing Games (RPGs) have been a mainstay of entertainment for years. Staring out as regular board games (i.e. Dungeons and Dragons), they soon drifted their way toward the video game realm.
My father never understood why I loved playing RPGs so much. As he said time and time again, "Where's the action?" What he didn't understand, and what many people didn't understand is that I loved what RPGs had to offer: To assume the role of a Hero on grand quest to slay a terrible evil or to right some terrible wrong in the world. Such an inticing quality attracts so many average people living in an age of business suits, calculus classes, and traffic jams.
As more and more people drift toward the realm of RPG video games, they should know this about RPGs: you can derive countless hours of enjoyment playing RPGs. Unlike a fighting or "shoot-em-up" game full of action and not much else, RPGs unveil a story that can captivate and mystify any game player. You will travel across a virtual world in order to complete certain tasks, to save and rescue people in distress, or even save the entire world. Logical and important decisions made while playing an RPG will determine any future outcomes in the game, so having a strategic mind is a must.
These are the qualities an excellent RPG has that give players the enjoyment they crave:
1. STORYLINE
The storyline of any excellent RPG will keep you playing that game for hours on end, like the story of a good book will prevent you from putting that down until the end. If the main plot of the game truly stands out, it will keep you stuck to your seat with your eyes transfixed to your television set.
Several RPGs, like the classic Dragon Warrior, have a simple plot: You are the direct descendant of the legendary hero Erdrick, and you must save the kingdom of Alefgard from the forces of darkness. This game is an example of how a storyline, despite its elegant simplicity, can become an instant classic with millions of gamers. (By the way, the Dragon Warrior series is adored by millions across the world, especially Japan where its called Dragon Quest).
Other RPGs have an magnificently intricate storyline. Imagine a plot along the lines of a Shakespearean epic: murder, intrigue, betrayal, lust, lost innocence, broken friendships, sacrifice, redemption, true love...... With a plot that has conditions and situations changing as you progress in the game, it keeps the game player wanting more, demanding more, NEEDING more in order to keep the story going. Watching the epic unfold into unpredictable twists and turns is what keeps me playing for hours on end.
One such epic is another classic: Final Fantasy II (a.k.a. Final Fantasy IV in Japan). A truly fabulous game.
2. CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
The players you assume and control in the game also add a sense of depth in a game. Both main characters and supporting cast always have a unique or mysterious past that adds an interesting twist to the story.
Imagine someone that was orphaned as a child, and developed into a hard, bitter person. Or see what happens when one friend betrays another because of a girl. See the pain when a character's entire life is turned upside down when certain revelations are made, and their fate is directed into another path.
RPGs have such characters; characters you can relate to and feel for, which adds a sense of realism you can enjoy while playing. This might also blur the line of fantasy and reality for some, but always remember - in the end, it's only a game.
To any readers:
After reading this editorial, I hope you now have enough background information to decide whether you want to start playing Role Playing Games. Although some RPGs do not have fast-paced, mindless action, they do keep players entertained by conveying a magnificent story complete with characters that only add spice and flavor to such a story. Instead of shooting first and asking questions later, every choice and action you make in an RPG allows the story to evolve ever so slightly. Although many feel that only individuals with a keen mind can only play RPGs, anyone can always take up the challenge.
