After spending a week at that icky place up the block, I was ecstatic to find the Ask Me Inn. I was just kind of wandering the area around A1A and asking rates trying to find a better place for a longer period in Ft Lauderdale. I was drawn to this little gray stucco place with bright blue trim. I have to tell you folks, this does not in any way seem like a hotel at all. It felt like home right off the bat.
This is a 3-story place in the shape of a U with a very nice little courtyard in the center filled with all manner of plants, garden fountains, garden fairies, and patio furniture with this huge gorgeous hand-painted seascape mural going up the steps. Its just so damn cute I cannot get this into words to properly tell you just how cute this place is. I rented a room for a month. That tell you anything?
The location is on Birch Rd, which is one block off of A1A (the ocean) to the east, and one block from the Intercoastal Waterway to the west. In other words, its on the outer bank and sandwiched between 2 fabulous bodies of water. Location, location, location! You get the best of both worlds yet have the serenity of not being exactly on either strip and being bothered by the wild parties on the weekends. Being between the 2 waters allows for a very welcome breeze in the heat of a south Florida August.
There are a variety of rooms here, but I went the least expensive route since Ive almost shot the wad on this little adventure. Heh. My room is an efficiency, and again, I cannot tell you the effect it had on me upon first site. I was home, by gawd. My room has a huuuuge bed, the biggest Ive ever seen. I'mm 5'2" and can lay side-ways across it without anything hanging over the edge. Wow. Talk about comfy! Ive been sleeping like a baby in this bed.
My TV is mid-size and sits in a cabinet over 3 drawers. I also have a long, low dresser with another 6 drawers, a walk-in closet, a wicker love seat, a little round table with 2 chairs, and a nightstand
but that aint all. There is a refrigerator that is very close to full size, a microwave and toaster on top of that, a toaster oven which has two hot plates built into the top of it, and a full size coffee maker. I have the full range of cable channels and a phone that folks can call direct without bugging the owner in the office. It even has voice mail.
The bathroom is tiny but very cute. There is no tub, but a nice sized shower. There are plenty of towels and the water pressure is great. You do have to let the water run a few minutes to draw the hot water up, but once its flowing it gets very hot, so be careful. Heh. Little soaps are supplied along with liquid shower soap, which doubles as shampoo. There are also mini-bar items in the fridge for $1.50 each
things like bottled water, a variety of sodas, candy bars, and crackers.
The décor is fabulous. The duvet and bed skirt are a green floral and just very inviting. I have 4 huge pillows and 2 smaller decorative pillows. The bathroom is done in a sea green with sponge accents in an ocean motif. Very breezy feeling.
My room happens to be in the back so it has its own patio complete with a bar-b-que grill. There is also a hot tub back there that has recently been drained for cleaning, but will be very nice indeed should I happen to stay on here through the winter
and I have every intention of finding a way to do so. I like it just that much. I have to say it again: This does not feel like a hotel, it feels like home.
Parking here is off-street, free, and assigned so you never have to worry about finding a place. Its not guarded but I doubt you have to worry about anything here. The spaces are close enough to the rooms that anything out of the ordinary would be seen rapidly.
The air conditioning is an older window unit but it does the job quite nicely
almost too good. I find myself turning it off during the day and leaving my door and windows open when Im in the room. Its situated perfectly to catch those cool breezes.
There is a laundry room back by my room with one washer and dryer unit. It runs $1.50 each to wash and dry and the machines work very well.
There is no smoking in any of the rooms but you dont want to stay cooped up anyway. If you do slip and have a smoke in your room, be aware that it will cost you $150 for cleaning fees. Just dont do it. Im a very vocal smoker, yet for some reason this hotel is so cool that even I obey this rule. Come out to the patio or the courtyard and have a smoke with us. Its very relaxing out here.
My room runs $850 for a month, which is a nice cut from the $250/week rate (in low season). Im not sure how much it would be daily. Im guessing about $59 per night in low season
high season (Nov-Jan) would be much higher though. As I said, there are many different rooms and rates to choose from. Scarlett is happy to show you a few before you decide to stay with her. Shes quite proud of her rooms, and rightly so.
The one drawback is the owner herself, who can be a bit schizoid. One minute she is nice as could be, and the next she's a raving lunatic. Ya pay yer fee and take yer chances here. If you catch her on a good day, then you will have no complaints here... but catch her during one of her 'moments' and you'll want to check right back out...
