Pros: Software (with Windows XP), Scan results, and Price
Cons: Scanner has a fatal flaw in the design of the case.
The Bottom Line: Stay far away from this scanner. Wait for Microtek to come out with a new model that works.

| jmackley's Full Review: Microtek ScanMaker 5950 Flatbed Scanner |
I started having problems with the ScanMaker 5950 immediately after installation. I noticed that the scan bar was getting "stuck" part way down the page! Then I started reading reviews and found a LOT of others report the same problem. Often this scanner rates 5 stars or 1 star depending on if it works at all. I found and "fixed" the problem but it requires some warranty voiding surgery on the plastic case. It appears plastic case tolerances are too tight, sometimes causing the scan bar to collide with the interior clip that holds the top and bottom parts of the plastic case together. Here's what I did: 1) Pryed up on the plastic lip on the side section of the glass until I could pop loose the clip that holds the top and bottom plastic sections together; 2) used a hack saw blade to cut the bottom of the clip off; and 3) placed a binder clip onto the top section in the gap separating the two sections - this pulls the top side section out a bit and allows the scan bar to complete it's journey. Now the scanner works GREAT! The software has worked flawlessly with Windows XP and it comes with Adobe PhotoDeluxe which is great photo editing software. The document feeder works well also (with a little care). However the 5950 rates a zero with me. Microtek should recall this scanner immediately until the problem with the case is fixed.
