I've aged, already
May 19 '01
The Bottom Line Be kind. Be gentle. You're just a generation way.
I am submitting this review under the Caring for the Aging Parent, because I am the aging parent who is being cared for. Now that makes sense to me. Hello Epinions—okay with you?
It has taken me 70 years to get to where I am today and in those 70 years I have been a lot of places, done a lot of things and met a lot of people. My life’s experiences fill me with my memories and I write about them, because that is about all I can do today. I am on a 25 foot tether that is attached to the oxygen machine that sits in my bedroom. It allows me to go from my bed, to the bath, to the computer. Now what more do I need? (My first connecting hose was 50 feet long, but I almost hung the dog, so they took it away.)
I live with my daughter, who is my Caregiver and I am in the Hospice program as I am a terminally ill emphysema patient. And now that I have said that, I will tell you I am content with my lot and I am ready to go when the Gentleman upstairs calls me. I have made my peace with God, (I hope), and I have no fear of death.
Now that that is out of the way, let us press on.
There is one myth I would like to get out of the way. I am not the “goody-two-shoes” my children think I am. I’ve had a roll in the hay, been in the back seat of a car, did the beach at low tide and thoroughly enjoyed every guilty moment of it.
I’ve baked in the warm sun in Florida, froze my a$$ in the Great North east, been “sleepless in Seattle” and lost my shirt in Vegas. That tells you, that is not age on my face, that is mileage.
I have smoked, beer was my drink of choice and most of the home-made bread started out as frozen loaves from the store.
What has all this got to do with aging, you ask. Nothing really. It just helps fill up the page. Because ever since I signed up for this write-off I have not been able to come up with a theme or an idea. Writing about aging is not as easy as it sounds. In my case, aging has already happened. My daughter is the caregiver and I am the caregivee.
What more is there to say?
Thank you, Ed. Thank you, Angela and thank you to all who read.
