The Bottom Line: Avoid all Epson products, especially scanners.

I purchased this unit after several years of reliable use of HP scanners. However, the slide functionality of this unit attracted me, plus the favorable reviews of others.
Unfortunately, the unit is inconsistent with its USB connectivity in either USB 2.0 or 1.1 format, whether to hubs or direct to PC. This shoddy driver scripting resulted in the unit working in fits and starts, eventually locking up completely and rendering the unit useless.
Epson Corp was contacted by email multiple times with no response. Phone calls resulted in interminable hold times. Eventually I threw the unit away and went back to HP scanners.
Review
Packing: Unpacking and setting up the unit was easy and straightforward. The unit was shipped and packed with care and thoroughness with all necessary cables included to be up and running.
Installation: Physical hookup was no problem, with the directions being very clear and well written. Software installation was ugly- excessive bloatware with few options to minimize the amount of hard drive space taken up by the 'optional' copy, business card, emailing programs. Getting the device recognized by my Windows XP Dell machine was a nightmare, requiring multiple installations and reboots.
Usage: A nightmare. The program might scan one image, then lock up and require a physical restart of both the scanner and computer. While the software layout is logical and easy to follow, the fact that it didn't work was a big downside.
Support: After 2 weeks of use when the machine finally starting making grinding noises and then blinking a red light indicating total breakdown, Epson would not respond. The unit was purchased DIRECTLY from the Epson store, and their lack of response or accountability despite numerous emails and unanswered phone calls is appalling.
No doubt they are overwhelmed by dissatisfied customers.
