Some other things I do (Reply to this comment)
by firstcontact21
to keep my car safe include:
1. Keeping it as empty as possible. Keep things locked away and hidden in your trunk. Or if you are like me, and you have a van or SUV, have the back windows coated so they are blackened and you can see out of them from inside, but you can't easily see into them from the outside. In some places you can have all your windows blackened, but in Canada you can only have the back ones blackened.
2. I also keep my glove box empty, and leave it opened when I am away from my nissan pathfinder. So where do I keep my insurance papers, etc? I have a very small rubbermaid snap case that I keep those things in, and it sits under the back seat, easy to reach if I ever need to, but invisible to intruders.
3. Also open any other things you have visible, so you can see from the outside that it is empty - be it an ash tray or those consels inbetween the seats. I leave them all open.
You can also get a sticker from some insurance companies or the police, that you can put on your door window that says something to the effect of "there are no valuables kept inside this car."
4. The interior lights - I have roof lights in my pathfinder inside, I can shut them off completely. So if you open the doors, the car is dark inside. That way, if it's night, the theif can't see as well and has to fumble around more and waste time.
5. I use the club as well.
6. I listen to a rock & roll station - after I've parked and shut my vehicle off I crank up the volume. That way, if they were to jump it they'd get the crap scared out of them by very loud music. The only thing with this is you have to remember to turn down the volume before you start the car again - but even if u do forget a few times, after a few times of being blasted to hell by loud music, you won't forget.
The only thing I don't have is a car alarm. Apparently here in British Columbia Canada, there is one device you can get that the insurance company will actually support and give you money off your insurance right away. And that is an immobolizer. You get it installed and basically you have a key card that you swipe over it when you leave your car, and once you do that they can't start the engine no matter what without that key card. Some cars now install that automatically but older ones do not.
Also in BC, they have a program called CAT (Combat Auto Theft). What you do is you register your vehicle with ICBC (insurance company), and they send you a sticker that you visibly place on the back of your car. Basically what this does is give cops carte blanche to pull your car over between the hours of midnight and 1am. By signing up for this program, you're saying that you don't normally drive between those hours and cops can check to see if it's been stolen or not. Apparently the program is very successful.
anyways, those are just some of the things I've done, and luckily, I've never been broken into.. yet.
Great review.. take care and keep writing!
