Yeah that's called a layer change. It pauses for a second only if you're on a slower laptop, or bought a Orbitron DVD player from Wal-Mart. As for the recording, yes I agree that is one reason you must have a VCR, but I was contrasting movies. Widescreen will always be better then fullscreen. If some people don't like it they should stick with their VHS and 16" TV's... since a small screen seems to be the main complaint against widescreen.

I would take issue however with some of the things you stated about widescreen. I myself have come to enjoy widescreen and recognize it as a tremendous benefit to my viewing experience.
Some folks however, simply don't like widescreen, whatever it's benefits. Very little has been done to address this problem and it's only going to get worse as more people buy into DVD for the enhanced features.
And alas, DVD still can't compete with VHS when it comes to recording. Not in affordability anyway. I'm in love with the DVD format but I'll keep my VCR too.

Ever Noticed..? (Reply to this comment)

I liked your review and agree with everything you said regarding the comparison. However, have you ever noticed the occasional pause that comes in a given DVD? I'm not sure if every DVD I've watched has had one, but I will say that it has been apparent on more than one occasion.
It's not a detractor really, just a minor inconvenience. The scene is moving along, perhaps there is a chapter change, perhaps not. Then, inexplicably, the scene or shot freezes, if only for a small second. It's noticeable and yet it isn't. I'm not griping about DVD's here, because obviously they destroy VHS on all levels.
It is interesting to point out, though. At least there is one thing to be said about VHS. It doesn't randomly freeze..
Again, nice review. Regards.
