| clawsnoel's Full Review: Dell Latitude D600 (221-2640) PC Notebook |
The Latitude D600 is a very worthy and welcome successor to the C6 series (C600, C610, C640). With only a couple exceptions the D600 is an improvement.
The color is very professional-looking; good for impressing all your sales prospects. The integrated Gigabit NIC and 56K modem work just fine. There is only one PCMCIA card slot, but that should do for most people since this laptop also has the availability of a mini-PCI 802.11b/g/a card; mine come with the TrueMobile 1350 802.11g which gets the job done just fine. There are two USB ports on the back, although they are not USB 2.0. But, the old C series only had one USB port. Also built-in is a smart card reader.
Physically the weight is normal for this class of laptop, but one good design improvement is the motherboard is mounted in a metallic, rigid frame. The C series had a lot of motherboard failures due to flex of the case and this new frame design should take care of that problem. Indeed, the laptop even feels more "tight" when picking it up.
Two downs in comparison to the C6 are the fact that they have moved to the Alps touchpad. Personally I felt the feel and response of the Synaptics was far superior; not sure why Dell made this move. Must have been some manager somewhere making a deal with Alps. ;) The other drawback is that there are now two different batteries. The C6 series had a CD/FDD bay which matched the shape of the primary battery bay meaning you only had to buy/stock one type of battery. The D6 now has a bottom-mounted primary battery and then the secondary battery fits in the differently shaped optical/FDD bay.
LCD is excellent, keyboard has a great feel, and the combo eraser mouse/touchpad should satisfy anyone's needs.
UPDATE - 2/22/05
MY MISTAKE about the USB ports. They ARE, in fact, USB 2.0.
