I love Alibris, but it does have its shortcomings.
If you want a book fast, head to Amazon or B&N. If you want a book you can't find anywhere, Alibris is the place. Part of the fun of shopping at Alibis is the thrill you get when you finally find that obscure little book you've been after for years.
Since each book is listed by an independent dealer, you will rarely find those handy little plot summaries you see on Amazon. So if you're blind-searching, you may not end up with what you thought you were getting.
Delivery can be dismal. I've waited 8 weeks. Even choosing the bookseller closest to where you live is no guarantee of quick delivery. You're frequently purchasing from small mom-and-pop dealers who don't have much experience shipping orders. Most of the books I've received come wrapped in plain brown paper, with handwritten labels.
Alibris was very cooperative when I didn't receive a book I had purchased. They credited my account immediately.
Shopping at Alibris is like poking around in an old, slightly messy book store. Quite different from zipping through a Barnes & Noble.
If you love books...and you're patient...you'll probably love Alibris.
