Do bargain bites exist in Palo Alto? Well, depends on your definition of 'bargain'
by tanster | May 20 '01
Cheap is a relative term, especially in downtown Palo Alto. But here are a few recommendations for meals that won't hurt your wallet.

Dear tanster: Have you tried the Andale on Chestnut Street in the City? It is also an inexpensive island amid some over-priced spots.

All the best.

Good question, hvojr! Since I'm completely uneducated in what real NY pizza should taste like, I would venture a guess, like irbykb, that Palo Alto's NY Pizza joint, while tasty, is a pale comparison to its namesake. :)

Thanks for reading!

It sounds like the NY pizza in Palo Alto is much better than the one in downtown SF (between Montgomery and Kearny on an alley off Sutter St.).
The pizza there is greasy, slimy, soggy and tastes like cardboard.

The best pizza in SF is at Pizza Orgasmica in Cow Hollow, but don't hold your breath. You won't find pizza that compares to NY pizza anywhere but NY!

excellent article tanster! 8-)

Me gusta mucho El Cheapo (Reply to this comment)

Hubby always gets the Steak burrito, while I prefer the simplicity of the beans & rice of El Cheapo at Una Mas. Although the one in Sunnyvale (El Camino & Sunnyvale Ave) has been cooking their steak on the same grill as the lobster, so Hubby's been avoiding Una Mas because he doesn't like the 'fishy' smell of the steak burrito since they started that.

Too bad you don't like cilantro... I wish the snails in my back yard could say the same thing. I'm trying to grow a salsa garden (bell peppers, tomatoes, cilantro, next to my lime tree) but all of God's creatures are snacking away...

Enjoyed this review.

Good Thing I Was Eating While I Read This... (Reply to this comment)

...otherwise I would have been famished! I've written down at least 3 new places to try a nosh at, but I still must swear by the homey Hawaiian plates at the L&L Drive In in Redwood City: cheap and filling, I'll take the Kalbi beef ribs or Kalua pork plate anytime!

Thanks for rounding up a deserving handful of reasonably priced places, in the otherwise high-priced Peninsula!

Anyone would have thought that the only places to eat in Frisco (sorry, sorry, the "Bay Area") were the $50-a-plate places you usually write about; nice to know that there are some more good, reasonable selections available. Kudos.
