Cons: That darned "wrapped cord" thing; must unwrap whole cord to use wand.
The Bottom Line: Due to the power, ease of use, versatility and obvious thoughtful design, I will be checking out the Dysons first from now on--you should, too.

| donnapalmer's Full Review: Dyson DC07 steel / yellow Upright Vacuum |
Our family has a much greater fascination with vacuum cleaners than we are really entitled to have, since we are an average family with mild allergies, in an average-sized home, with no fur-bearing pets (at least not ones that leave the confines of their Habitrails!) Nevertheless, when vacuum shopping need becomes apparent, we look outside the usual selection at the local huge store, and investigate our wider options. This is how we came to own the Sharp Twin Cyclonic some years ago (besides my husband's employ at Sharp Electronics, that is!), and also how we became 2nd generation Fantom owners. Alas, our 2nd Fantom (Cyclone XT) wasn't quite the performance powerhouse that the 1st one (Fury) was, and we went further afield.
My Internet research sparked an interest in the Dyson, and this interest was fed by the little television spot that is running now, about the "first vacuum that doesn't lose suction"...I checked multiple consumer review sites (even the review site that reviews review sites!) and found very little in the way of negative opinion about the Dyson. My biggest hurdle now was to be the $400 price tag.
Well! Luckily for me, I found a site that got wonderful reviews for its customer service, that carries this vacuum which gets wonderful reviews for its performance, and I have arrived at a place of such sublime serendipidity!
This Dyson DC07 Yellow/steel vacuum came with the floor tool, which is also Yellow/steel (we must be coordinated when we vacuum) and was a grand total of $299.00 with free shipping from www.best-vacuum.com. It arrived in 3 business days, and I couldn't wait to get it out of the box.
As many other vacuum purchasers seem to do, I vacuumed with our "old" Fantom Cyclone XT first...and then "assembled" the DC07. This was just a matter of putting the extensible hose pieces together, which was an easy thing to accomplish.
A few things took some getting used to...the lack of an actual foot-switch to move the vac from upright to operational, first of all...it was a little disconcerting to just step on the head and pull down on the handle.
Then there was the suction at the top of the handle, (mentioned by another reviewer, so I was expecting this), but this isn't an issue when you are using the vacuum, so that is only worthy of mention because it is outside of the normal experience...I found the design of the handle/small tools to actually be ingenious and very intuitive to use, and can indeed reach areas now that used to require putting the vacuum on the couch and climbing on the back of the furniture. Those cobwebs in the distant reaches beyond the corner sectional don't stand a chance now! I also found it amazing that I can leave my upright at the base of the stairs and truly reach to the top without contortion of myself or of the hose, and there are even a few extra inches of wiggle room left over. We have 14 steps to our 2nd story, which is probably pretty average. The reversible function of the handle makes for a very positive feel when using the small tools and one wishes to apply a little "elbow grease"--very effective.
The suction itself is just wonderful; my first foray around the carpeting in our bedroom, the stairs, and the living room filled the canister (which, by the way, is similar in capacity to our Fantom...larger than some of the canisters I've seen--I "eyeball" it to be roughly a half gallon.
The many configurations of the hose and tools actually makes for some awesome cleaning experiences...I've been down our heating ducts to retrieve a favorite small doll, and all over the Chevy minivan, doing a better job than the car wash vacuum, by a long shot! You can use the flex hose alone, with an attachment on the end, for maximum flexibility (as in the ductwork endeavor), or use the wand, reversed, with a tool on the end, for maximum reach (as in that spot at the top of the stairs).
I must mention that it is quieter than any of our three last vacuums--each of which would send the cat and kids scattered to far corners of the house (well, the cat has died, but the kids stay put now).
I discovered my favorite aspect of the Dyson by accident (a little "should have read the owner's manual" moment)--emptying the cannister is an absolute breeze. A press of a button removes the cannister assembly from tbe vacuum body; to empty the reservoir you pull a trigger, which in turn drops a flap on the bottom of the cannister. I put a flattened shopping bag on the end of the cannister, pull the trigger, and have absolutely no loose dust flying around. A quick knot in the shopping bag and the dirt is confined and tossed out.
I must say, I believe that I have reached the end of my eternal vacuum quest with the discovery of the Dyson.
