They're not good enough...

The Bottom Line "Build and sound rules all else."
I'm sorry but computer speakers are rarely any good. Yes there ok for your usual beep or blonk that you computer outputs but, in music quality they just aren't good enough. Yes they will give sound, and yes you can listen to them. BUT the sound is better through bigger speakers.
You'll often find satellite + subwoofer packages but the subs are often just annoying, some like them, but they just don't add the low down punch a decent speaker can. Get a proper hi fi rigged up to your PC.
HOW?
Its easy. Once you have an amplifier, and speakers, you can connect a phono to 3.5mm jack from your sound card to the amp. Then just select the input its connected to. Simply done. But it won't cost much if you already have the hi fi! Just the cost of your cable! You could place you speakers by you around you or in front of you (as long as they are shielded).
Differences?
Oh boy, there are differences. First the dynamics of sound will be far clearer, shifts from bass to mid range to treble will be so smooth. Bass will have enough kick and no boom. You'll get crystal clear sound. As long as you sound card is up to the quality production your amp wants you will be in sound heaven.
On the other hand...
If you don't own a hi fi then you will have to buy a pair of speakers... Oh well, they'll sound ok I guess.
If you must buy them, go for brand names, I would highly recommend the Yamaha speakers, or Cambridge Soundworks, or Sony speakers. I have used these brands and they all sound great.
Just don't be expecting hi fi sound quality.
Subwoofer
Don't get them! I wouldn't worry about a sub, they just take up valuable desk space, and sound terrible. Just go for slim and strong desk standers. AS long as they are powered and come with an adapter it'll be good.
If you can test the speakers before purchase.
Watts
Don't go for those disgusting 300watt PMPO gimmicks, it simply means the manufacturer is that desperate to sell the product that they stick false gimmick to encourage interest. I find it a disgusting way to make money. The real power rating is in RMS, but still sound is not built around power. And you're not likely to get 300 watts of power into tiny little speakers.
You should really ask the assistant to take the speaker driver out, and plug it into a high powered amp, and then see if the little speaker can hold its sweat. (Watch it blow with in a second)
So if, and only if you must by a PC speaker, go for brand names, not gimmicks. Build and sound rules all else.
