What's There To Know?

May 22 '01

The Bottom Line Classic consoles can still be fun, but do not offer the "bells and whistles" of todays consoles.

Remember the old days, when you would sit at home in front of the Television and play countless hours of Super Mario Brothers? Well, perhaps you weren't one of those people, but nonetheless, they existed. At one point in time games like this were considered to be "awesome". The Nintendo was the console to own at the time of Super Mario Brothers. Now there are many new game consoles out. They include the aging, but still fun, Sony Playstation, Nintendo 64, and now, Playstation 2. These consoles have a lot of great features, but should we just leave behind the consoles of yesterday? I think there is something to be learned just by looking at the way technology has progressed in gaming.
Why were the Sega Genesis, Nintendo, and Super Nintendo so much fun? It's simple. Gamers weren't interested in glossy graphics and Emotion Engines; they wanted a plot and a purpose for the games. The game designers knew this, so they worked hard to produce games that, while they may not look great (hey it was the best there was at the time) had a great story line and/or "catching" theme. If you want to know something about classic consoles then know this; although today's technology offers many more options, the consoles of yesterday can still provide fun. Who needs fancy graphics and high speeds in a game such as Tetris? This game in particular was just plain addicting (and still is). Puzzle games need not have all the bells and whistles that today's game consoles offer.
Technology has progressed greatly since Nintendo. Nintendo offered a 16 bit system. The graphics were simplified and sounds were bleeps and blips. This didn't stop game designers from making games interesting though. Super Mario Brothers is a classic example (Can't you still remember the main theme music from Super Mario?). The game makers didn't need fancy equipment to provide an entertaining game. They simply put a lot of thought and time into making the game. Even the music was great, although it was very simple; it was catchy.
Nowadays game consoles have reached further than 64 bit. The music on games is pretty much CD quality songs. The graphics sometimes look real. The game play is fast and games offer many more options and "secrets". The gameplay is less straight forward, as complicated "engines" allow the gamers to interact at a higher level with the games characters and environment.
Although classic consoles will not offer you great graphics and top quality music, they can still offer a great time playing them. Pretty looks and sweet sound do not necessarily mean a game is good. Most people I know would prefer a game with a great plot and catchy story line over a game that looks nice, but has no purpose. I suggest you pull out the old system, dust it off, and play a few games. You may realize that it can still be fun.
