| rookshark's Full Review: Philips Nike ACT21017 128 MB MP3 Player |
First things first...this player has two personalities. The first unit I received as a gift worked for two weeks, and then died. Nike/Philips replaced it. Same thing happened. After all that, I put it aside, and bought a Sony. Of course, the next time I went to fiddle with it and decide whether to use it as a paper weight or throw it away, it worked, and has ever since. I did all the resets and what not they recommended both times, I have no idea why it works now. And I see from other reviews and websites that my experience was not an isolated incident. I'm not sure if that makes me feel better, or just a little more upset that Nike and Philips would sell such a product.
As to the actual use of the unit, when it works, it works well. I am not a huge fan of the buttons on the actual player, but since I use the remote control that came with it, I do not have to use them.
Transferring music is not a problem and pretty straight forward. For me, I connect the player, windows brings up a window showing me what I have on it, I copy and paste from the files on my computer, and whamo bamo.
However, you must connect the player every time you want to change anything, since the memory is internal, and not a CF card or memory stick. Not a major issue, but if you want to use this more than two hours straight, you are going to be listening to the same stuff again.
The player seems well protected from shock and sweat, which I expected since I was sold originally on it because it was for running or the gym. I have dropped it twice, and the back cover pops off, but otherwise no problems.
Battery life with the included battery seems fine. I do not really time it, so I can not give you actual hours, but it seems to be at least five. I also like the battery charger, which has an indicator light to tell you when it is fully charged. Nothing major, but something the sony I bought does not have.
One last thing...do not plan on using the headphones included. They are terrible. If you need to move your head in any direction, they pop out of your ears. The magnets to keep them from falling off your shirt are nice, but using the headphones while running was a joke. I switched them out immediately.
