Pros: Fast, reliable, with great customers service
Cons: RDRAM, Intel 820 chipset
The Bottom Line: In the face of competition from Gatway, Compaq, and HP, the Dell is far and away the best option.

This is the second Dell system I have owned and if I wasnt now building my own computers I would not hesitate to buy another Dell. In fact, in my opinion Dell is really the only quality commercial option out there considering the mediocre performance of Compaq and the lousy customer service and out-of-the-box problems of Gateway.
Dell offers a wide variety of customizable options to tailor your system, from hard drives, media devices and video cards to software options. As with any computer I have had various components fail but Dell always had a replacment part (not necessarily a new one though) to me within two days.
The one caveat to this system had to do with the use of an Intel 820 based motherboard. This chipset a rather mediocre performer compared to the older 440BX and chipsets from VIA. Add to that the fact that you must use ultr-expensive pairs of RDRAM and the price performace issue becomes a bit muddy. Dell is able to offset this somewhat with a relativley low overall system cost.
Considering the overall quality of the complete package that Dell offers for the price they do it is hard to understand how companies like Gateway can stay in business offering a lower quality product for more money?
