The Bottom Line The knife is both the hardest and most rewarding weapon in the game. It takes skill, but the satisfaction of a knife kill is well worth it.
"As you become more advanced, you can get closer to your client. You learn the knife last, it takes the most skill" -- Leon, The Professional in the film of the same name. The humble knife is looked upon by many Counter-Strike players as a mere plaything, or a last ditch weapon at best. However, the knife has it's own uses as both a backup and primary weapon. Knifing in Counter-Strike can happen for a variety of reasons. While the knife is arguably a weapon of last resort, it is actually a very, very effective weapon in the hands of one who knows what they are doing with it. I therefore present my guide to successful knife useage in Counter-Strike. Know your weapon: The knife is just like any other weapon in the game. It has both strengths and weaknesses. Also, there is a very specific tactic set that the knife works best with. Strengths The attacks for the knife are very, very effective. A primary swing will do 15 - 25 damage, depending on if it hits the head/body, and if the target is wearing kevlar. A headshot with a primary swing will do 60 -80 damage, depending on kevlar coverage. A secondary swing will do 55-65 damage, depending on location and kevlar coverage. A headshot with a secondary is pretty much instant death. Also, the knife is quiet. Like other suppressed weapons, it isn't totally silent, but rather can only be heard a short distance away. This makes it an effective way to kill without giving your position away too badly. Finally, the knife makes you think tactically when you use it. You have no ranged abilities, so you must concentrate on your tactics and stealth skills to move in and kill effectively. Weaknesses: Obviously, the knife is a melee weapon going up against ranged weapons. You are at a big disadvantage, because you are totally harmless until you can get into close range. Also, the knife has a somewhat oddball damage area. The damage area is a little hard to get used to, and you must really get a 'feel' for where the optimum place is to position yourself and to time your swing. Basic Skills: The bread and butter of any successful knife assault is to drop your chosen target. The secondary attack is most effective at doing this. Two secondaries anywhere on the target will put them in a pine box. The primary attack has it's uses, namely speed, higher rate of fire, and longer range. The secondary does not reach quite as far, and therefore is not a good idea in a knife fight. However, it is fine for dispatching annoying gun users. When going after a person with a gun, the primary is a waste of time, because if they are smart, when the first swing connects, they are going to jump 10 feet straight up in the air and come down shooting. With two secondaries, you have them dead before they know what hit em. The primary attack simply takes too long to nibble away at health. Next up, you must learn to get in close enough to use the knife. A lot of encounters with gun toting people will leave you at the short end of the stick. Worry not, using the knife as a primary weapon means that every kill is a moral victory. A good knife kill results in you sneaking in behind your opponants through a combination of stealth and movement, and delivering two secondaries to their back. Not only is this a challenge, but it's also quite fun. Advanced Skills and Tactics: Skills Ninja-like stealth and perception are what carries a knifer through to win the day. While it may seem very hard to develop these skills, it is really only a combination of situational awareness and good tactics. Situational awareness means many things. You must watch your opponents tactics, weapon preferences, and favorite hiding places. Knowing where your enemy is likely to hide, and what they are weilding are some very useful pieces of information to have. Also, there are some bad habits that gun dependent players develop. Most players will develop 'tunnel vision'. This means that they pay attention to only the most likely threat. This means that you have an easy time picking off those who shoot at your teammates. There are too many things a good knife user needs to know to put here. A lot of these things are things that a player must learn on their own. Suffice to say, the heart of knife skills lies with knowing where your opponants are, without them knowing where you are. This is a fairly striaghtforward exercise in deduction and observation. Listen to footsteps, and use your radar. Always, always, always use the radar. Also, pay attention to what your teammates are doing, or where and how they died. Tactics At the heart of knife tactics is stealth and deception. Ideally, you must get into a position where you can attack an enemy without immediate notice. This means that you must be very adaptable in your tactics. Come one way, or do something one round, then do something else. Be unpredictable, have no readily identifiable 'favorite' tactics. While these are good all around tactics to use, they are taken to the next level with a knife. You can bamboozle an entire team, and pick off half their number if you are thorough and efficient. Being sneaky is also another key quality that a knifer must cultivate. Come from odd directions, or at odd times. Be unpredictable, because a predictable knifer is a dead knifer. Obviously, you will never succeed 100% of the time in sneaking up on your opponants. This means you are going to have to take out someone with a gun in a head to head fight. Fighting a person with a gun is tough to do, but you can win in a lot of cases. First off, dodge and strafe as much as possible. If there is cover about, use it. If you choose to go on the offensive, bunny hopping and strafe jumping are both effective. Ideally, you want to simultaneously make your enemy empty his clip, and back him into a corner at the same time. Obviously, you are going to take damage when you go head to head with a person with a gun. The idea is to make them miss as much as possible to minimize damage you take. This means that you need to jump about and be as erratic as possible. One tip: Do not duck. Ducking only slows you down, and makes the headshot a higher percentage shot. This is bad. Overall: The knife is a viable weapon in several situations. Whatever your reason or need to use the knife, these tips will help you markedly. Not only is knifing a challenge, it also makes Counter-Strike far more fun. Nothing says loving like going into a server with only your knife and your wits. Knifing is not recommended for noobies, in my opinion. The knife is one of the hardest, and most rewarding weapons to use in the game. It's quite a challenge, but the glory of killing 3 guys with colts or singlehandedly dropping an AWP sniper with only a knife are worth the hard work. |
