| LILvoyce's Full Review: Meco Samsonite 2-Step Stool |
I am only five feet and one and a half inches tall. Due to health problems, I need a stool that will raise me high enough to reach my top cabinets with out stretching. My ideal stool would be light in weight for me to carry from room to room, and strong enough to hold my husband for when he gets his "Honey do," list.
I chose to purchase the Meco Samsonite 2-Step Stool about two years ago. It is still going strong, and will probably out live its owner.
Description
My stool looks just a tad bit different than the one in the picture. Maybe it is just the view of the picture that makes mine look different. My Meco Samsonite 2-Step Stool does not have a straight back, but rather bent to have a shoulder in the back. This is perfect for when we have company and need an extra chair. My son can comfortably sit on the top step and have room to rest his arms.
This stool measures around 29in x 18 in x 22.
The construction of this stool is great. The legs and steps are made up of HEAVY steel. My stool happened to come in a shiny white color, with a black vinyl or possibly leather topped over a cushioned foam (Urethane), and a protective vinyl film on the bottom step, which has a rough sandpaper feel to it. It is meant to be slip resistant. I have never felt like I was going to slip, either with shoes or barefoot.
The bottoms of the legs have four black plastic/or possibly rubber caps on the end. They are really hard so I am guessing they are plastic.
There is a black wrap/coating around the top of the legs. My guess is to protect the stool from having any sharp edges. The stool and steps will fold into a thin straight alignment. The back of this stool has a support bar going across the back of the legs, and also two support bars at the top where the stool begins to fold.
Uses
I use my stool for everything, especially sitting while I am doing chores around the house. I have trouble standing for long periods of time. I can almost pull my stool close enough to do the dishes while sitting on it. It is a bit of a stretch, but I still get the job done. It is perfect for me, because It gives me enough height when I am sitting on it to do dishes, or prep food for dinner, and some days I even sit on it while I cook.
I have to use it to get the plates down, or coffee cups that I have on the top shelves. I have a whole cabinet with just spices in it. I can step on the bottom stool and feel comfortable enough to stand for short periods of time. If I feel a bit uneasy, I can always grab on to the back handle of the stool.
I pull it to the bathroom and am able to wash the parts of the walls that I missed while just standing. I am so happy with this stool. I really feel comfortable and at ease with it. I have not experienced any shaking or wobbling with this stool. I have not heard any signs of distress or creaking. This stool is so strong I would feel comfortable enough standing on it with another person if I had to.
I am probably more nervous than most to get on a stool. My arms and legs are normally so stiff. With any other stool I have been afraid to step up. I am still afraid to step on the top of the second step even with this stool. It is not the stool that I am afraid won't work, but rather my legs. I normally save the higher stuff for my husband's weekend, "Honey do list."
My husband can stand on this stool with out any problems or worries about it giving out. He is about 210 pounds.
What I love about the stool
As you can already tell, I am won over by this product. I only paid around twenty five dollars for this stool at my local hardware store. I think that the price was great considering we still have the stool and it is still going strong. I think I really purchased a winner.
After all this time, I have a few scuffs on the legs. That is the only sign of wear. This stool is easy to clean with a bit of surface cleaner and a paper towel.
What I disliked about this stool
It is really heavy, and a real pain in my shoulders to have to lug around. I move it around when I am having a good day, or I normally end up limiting it using it in just the kitchen. I can't complain about the weight to much, because I would not be able to count on a lighter step stool.
Also, I prefer not to fold up this chair when I am placing it in my utility room. I have dinged up the walls on several occasions. This stool is not very forgiving when you bump it or scrap it next to your walls. Most of the time I leave it open.
Warning
*NOTICE* This was taken directly from the tag on my Stool: "This article does not meet California bureau of Home Furnishings Flammability Requirements Technical Bulletin 117. Care should be exercised near open flame or with burning cigarettes."
I have never had any problems, and had never even noticed the tag until I went to do this review. I will keep these Flammable issues in mind.
Overall?
I would not trade this stool in for anything. I love it, and can count on it to help me out with many daily chores around the house. It has saved me a lot of aches and pains.
