Bought this car in June 2003 to replace a F150 gas guzzler on long commutes from country to work. Have been very pleased with overall performance. I get 43 to 45 mpg consistently while driving hard (heavy acceleration and cruising over the speed limit). My wife gets 50 mpg when she drives at the posted limit. Great range of 500+ miles per tank with a reserve of about 80 miles.
Have put over 50,000 miles on it so far with no major problems. Car handles nicely and rides well. I bought the leather package and monsoon stereo. Everyone likes the heated seats. Cargo room is good for a small car. Engine and road noise are low for a diesel.
A few minor complaints. First, the car sits so low to the ground that I have had a problem of getting the front bumper stuck on curbs. I have had the bumper pull out twice when I suddenly pulled away from the curb and have had to screw it back in. Second, anytime you need to get service or parts from VW, you will need a loan. I do most of the regular servicing myself but the few times that I went to VW, I nearly choked on the bill.
All in all though, a very good choice for long commuters.
