Watch out for flaws.
Written: Mar 29 '01
Pros:Easy to get started, especially if you have some bookkeeping knowledge.
Cons:Next year's disks can really mess up your records if flawed.
The Bottom Line: It's cheap.
ok if you keep other records to check on their possible errors. Especially useful if you hate paper tax forms.
I wouldn't buy it again.
I am a retired finance officer, used Tax Cut for a home business for several years. Seemed to work ok, except slower than I could do my books manually, but having the electronic print-out and tax submission was worth the extra effort. Until....
One year, I installed the new year's disks, checked everything, looked ok, so I entered a months' work. Then did a "year-end" test. Whoops, several recurring items divided between home and office expense seemed to have scrambled their allocations. Called and was told it must be a flaw in the disks, they would send new disks.
"What about the stuff I entered?" I asked.
"Re-enter it." I was told. It was a pain, especially since the disks didn't arrive for one more month.
The next year, I didn't even wait a month, checked everything. All seemed ok. Until... end of the quarter, it still looked ok, until I wondered why I was paying more tax than usual. Somehow it had scrambled everything about my mortgage calculations of principal and interest paid(which affected my home/office distributions and everything else.)Their only solution was a suggestion they send new disks and I could enter every item posted for the first 5 months again.
Why bother?? I went back to my manual system. I did use the program to transfer my totals to their electronic tax form and checking system with little problem once I decided what the correct totals were. (I did have to do a bit of fudging to the program to get it to accept my calculations in lieu of its own.) This was several years ago, so they may have improved. But I doubt it.
