I've been a customer of Musician's Friend for quite some time as a catalog shopper. But as I became more trusting of shopping via the internet, I decided to switch from catalog shopping to using their online store. What I have found is that they are a competent, dependable service that I would not hesitate to use again in the future.
I have made a few purchases from Musician's Friend Online, but my most recent order was my largest one. I wanted a replacement pickup for my guitar, and a Rocktron compression unit. As I was shopping for these items on their user friendly online catalog, I also discovered a device made by Tascam that allows you to slow down CDs without affecting their pitch so that you can figure out musical pieces.
Finding items is pretty easy. There are categories for guitar, bass, amps, accessories, etc. And within these categories, there are pull-down lists of the different brands in each category. You can also type in a brand or product and let the site search for your request.
After researching the information provided for the items I was interested in, which includes large photos with zoom capability, customer reviews, and occasionally a downloadable user manual, I added the 3 products I had chosen to my shopping cart. When I "checked out", I found the process to be very simple, and was given the opportunity at each step to alter or revise the order as well as the billing and shipping info. An order confirmation was in my e-mail inbox within seconds of completing the transaction, and happily, I found the ordering pages to be secure.
Musician's Friend provides several air and ground shipping options. On larger orders, and on certain products, you may be eligible for free shipping.
My order arrived a day earlier than I had originally calculated, but I knew this was going to happen because I was able to track my order the whole way, with details as to when it arrived and departed every stop along the journey to my doorstep.
My only complaint with the order was that the Tascam CD player had a plastic case which had to be bent somewhat to fit it in the box. Now, I really don't care about the plastic; it went in the trash as soon as I made sure the player was intact and functioning properly. However, I would have been upset if I was planning to give it to someone as a gift. This could have been easily avoided by using a slightly larger box. Also, there were no styrofoam packing peanuts in the box.
Musician's Friend Online Store has many of the same prices for items as I found when visiting actual stores such as Sam Ash and Guitar Center. I don't think you'll find any bargains, but you won't be spending more than the bigger retail chains either.
Although there is a customer service line and a return policy stated for most items, I can't comment on these because they weren't part of my shopping experience.
