Your review is very well written, and therefore a very good review, but I couldn't disagree more. I just finished this book, and found it extremely powerful and verging on brilliant.

Obviously many others agree with your opinion, but I was very moved by this book and highly recommend it. I came to read other's reviews because I felt that I couldn't write a review that would do justice to the book. Maybe I'll try.

I think that great thing about Epinions is that we all do have our own opinions and this is a place we can share them. I do hope others will choose to read this book, and I hope they're as moved by it as I was.

Thanks for stopping by, Bob. I look forward to reading your review of this novel. I always enjoy reading reviews of books I've read when the reviewer finds more fault with the story than I have.

cheers,

Kate

...with much of what you say about this book, only I think it's a little worse than you do. Other than a (very) few interesting parts, I thought it was mostly crap, and adolescent crap at that. I'll be writing a review shortly.

In any event, nice review!

Huh indeed. Thanks for the comment. I don't see much in it worth responding to though.

I was baffled by your hatred of the word "shtetl," which you go on to repeat again later. You consider this book a self-satisfied mess (and in parts, yes, it is), but washing this book in the veneer of being elitist with its word choices is its own form of elitism.

You also didn't mention that Alex slowly loses more and more of his translation problems as the novel progresses further to adulthood. I'm glad you know some Russians and Ukrainians, but to assume that because of the people you know there, you know how Russians and Ukrainians would speak in English is ridiculous. That's like me saying I know how everyone in California speaks, because I've lived in Encino for six years.

The reason I gave you a bad mark on this review is not because you disagreed with the novel or its intentions. You just didn't do so coherently. A washing-my-hands-of-this-book review isn't helpful, but it is instructive on the reviewer's own biases.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who couldn't muster much enthusiasm for this book. Other reviews have been quite effusive about the novel. To each their own, I suppose...

A good friend of mine... (Reply to this comment)
by cr01
lent me this book about 12 months or so ago.

I think I got about a third of my way through it before completely losing interest, despite it being well written.

It's good to find out that things don't get any better.

I'm obviously not missing much.

Really, Andy? Who knew writers' workshops were such pernicious producers of pabulum? Ah, there I go alliterating again. Do forgive me.

Thanks for stopping by, Andy.

all the best,

Hi, quasar! I believe you had this reaction once before after reading a review of mine in which I panned the novel. It was Shadowmancer, if I recall correctly - an almost infinitely worse book than this one. So did you ever get around to reading that one, and if so, what did you think of it? I promise not to say, "I told you so," to match your promise not to blame me.

Glad I could provide a data point for you, Lily. Remember of course, that this is just one person's opinion. Plenty of other people have enjoyed the book.

cheers,

that I want to read this now. Don't worry - I consider myself well warned and I won't blame you in the slightest if I hate it.

Ah, writer's workshops. (Reply to this comment)

Half the half-baked ideas that drown our bookstores can be blamed on writer's workshops. Of course, just imagine what they'd be like if they hadn't passed through the workshops!
