Dell Dimension 8100 (Reply to this comment)
by texrodeo
I received this computer a few months back and it had been for the most part stripped. I have been a PC/MAC tech for more than 16 years and was able to see the potential in this Fimension 8100 tower. I added 2 80GB Hard Disks, CD R/RW and a DVD ROM, I am concidering a DVD R/RW drive in the future, Also I upped the processor from 1.3Ghz. to 1.5Ghz. Installed 512MB RDRAM and Loaded a very nice software package driven by Windows XP Professional. This system is a powerful system and runs very well for my needs. I also have an Inspiron 2200 Laptop, As well as an HP Pavilion N-5240 Laptop for a backup.
Cons:
The RDRAM is faster than standard memory but hard to come by and when you able to locate some it's very expensive for a memory upgrade.
Pro:
Powerful system, very versitile and so far very reliable.

Interesting, and I wonder how well Dell holds up to your scrutiny today. Your Dimension was purchased at about the same time as I got my Inspiron 8000 (now an 8200 - long story). On the laptop side of things, I'm surprised at how easy they made it for me to upgrade just about anything in the unit...only, like you say, Dell parts are about all you can use.
I look forward to seeing some of your newer stuff. Good job.

This is the first epinion I have read written by you. I currently own both a Dimension 8100 and an Inspiron 8000 notebook.
Cons:
- It seems the only problem you had with this desktop was the fact that you couldn't 'tinker' with it and that's fine; that's why you can always purchase a MOBO / chip combo and build the rest. But the fact that a namebrand desktop doesn't allow you to tinker with it more is not really a valid point when discussing the merits or problems with a name-brand desktop computer because you could have said the exact same thing with ANY desktop. Ironically, DELL is the ONLY manufacturer that allows a wide variety of components so that you can 'custom-build' your system. Gateway and Compaq do offer similar capabilities, but not as wide-ranging as DELL's.
- I also didn't understand why you couldn't 'tinker' with your DELL desktop; DELL doesn't 'glue' the components to the MOBO: You can easily change the audio card/video card, drives, monitors, etc. But you will void the warranty; which really shouldn't be a concern to you because when you build your own computer, you don't get any warranty anyway.
PROS:
I like your writing style with its humorous content. Unfortunately I couldn't give you a VH because of the above.
FYI: DELL allows you to change ownership so that the new owner can enjoy the benefits of the warranty originally purchased.

Re: You+CAN+add+to+Compaq! (Reply to this comment)
by bluehawq
I don't know. I still tend to disagree to some point. The integrated systems are worthless to me or at the very least are much more a pain in the rear end if you decide to upgrade with better sound, mother board etc. If I can't pull it out and replace it as simply as I can say it..then it is not something that appeals to me. lol...don't know..maybe I am too picky. :)

You CAN add to Compaq! (Reply to this comment)
by pyallen
I have a Compaq, and I've added two hard drives and more memory. The owner's manual even gives step by step instructions on how to add components. I think where the confusion lies is the fact that the components that COME in the Compaq have Compaq specific drivers, and won't work in other computers without a lot of BS. I found this out when my computer crashed and the restore disk was defective. I couldn't get the modem, soundcard, etc to work until I got the disk with the proper drivers, generic ones won't work. Great Dell review, though!

Another Dr. Dos! (Reply to this comment)
by telefrog
That's what we call my Dad, because he's the family computer guru and he never uses a computer as-is. He used to be a big Dell fan himself, but now he prefers to get a generic store-brand and take it apart! I'm just not that computer savvy myself, but I still won't buy a Compaq because not only is everything proprietary, it's hard-wired. I do at least know how to install a CD-RW drive or add a memory card, and would like to be able to do so.

Thank you Ada. These companies are just ruining themselves, if you ask me. It is all in the name of greed and the desire to be #1.

My experience with Dell, too. (Reply to this comment)
by AdaDavis
They used to be the best company in the business, but I prefer not to deal with them any more. Setting up a computer lab last year, 4 of the thirty machines didn't work out of the box- two for dumb things like a ribbon cable that had never been attached to the hard drive, and a power cable not attached to the floppy drive. Opening the machines to correct the problem got a hand slap from Dell, because it "violated the warranty" to open the case. Apparently, we were supposed to send them back to the Dell technician! One bad hard drive, and one unstable heat sink. I could have replaced the hard drive in a few minutes, and had a new one formatted and reloaded with software in one day. But- I had to wait for Dell to replace the drive, and that took over 2 months.
Also, Dell doesn't like to deviate from their standard "packages". If you want something specially tailored, go to Gateway.
Like you, I have a "no name" computer put together from new and rebuilt parts. It's a little hard to write an opinion on something with no brand name!
Great review!

Thanks Jamie.
If I had half a brain...I would still have it. lol...it just wasn't what I wanted..as sweet as it was. I love to tinker and add this and that and Dell isn't like it used to be. You can't put just any and everything in it anymore. And even though what it has is grand..there are even better things. So...I bought the generic and made it into what I wanted and it too is spectacular!
