We have to budget OR ELSE! (Reply to this comment)
by k1j2g3
The problem comes when you are doing all these things you suggested, but still can't afford anything! :-(
You have some great ideas...especially about getting clothes and toys at garage sales. Sadly, once your child gets past the age of 5, this isn't really much of an option. It is very easy to find baby and toddler clothes this way, but I have found even 3T and 4T clothese are rare commodities in my neck of the woods.
My family RARELY eats out. Not that we like it that way, but it became a necessity after the birth of our second child. I think if we ever start making more money, we still won't go out often as we realize what a big expense this is.
Another question I have: How do you budget to reduce stress if your spouse is not of the same mind? Any suggestions? I have run into several friends with this problem...and they ended up with huge credit card and other debt.

I printed this one out. Come payday I will get everything, sit down with a new note book and get busy. Besides mortgage and Van payment, groceries is third on the list.

Great idea about the yard sale (I get everything for my daughter resale-- she dresses to kill and I hardly pay anything for it!) Also, great idea about the emergency fund-- unfortunately, you never know when you'll need it so you might as well be prepared.
Super review...

Budget (Reply to this comment)

I agree that managing finances requires a plan.
Something unexpected always seems to crop up threatening to throw the budget out of kilter.
Making savings the first priority makes these unexpected bumps in the road much easier to navigate. For me, the number two priority is setting aside money for potatoes!
