Just a glorified VCR!!!! I used to use a 7100... a true PVR

Pros: Huge hard drive.
Easy to set record times
Cons: Only records based on date and/or day,and time.
Inability to record based on program title!
The Bottom Line: I wouldn't call this a PVR as it has absolutly no ability that my VCR doesn't have other than to record for an astounding number of hours.

Other reviews got the good stuff right, but I can't believe that they only barely mention the biggest flaw as if it is OK!
I am referring to the fact that this unit is basically a VCR with a really long tape. I like to record reality shows which are often aired at 'special' times or have an extended episode for the finale.
Another review mentioned the fact that his old 7200 had the ability to record based on the program title while the 721 did not. While this doesn't sound so bad, it really is. As I am typing this, a show that normally starts at 9:00 had the season finale start a 8:00. Had I not known or had forgot to re-set the timer, the first hour would not have been recorded. With my old 7100, the entire thing would have been recorded even if i hadn't known about the extended last episode. As I mentioned earlier, this is a glorified VCR as it records when you tell it to without taking what you want to record into consideration. The 7100 would record 'Friends', for instance, six times a day on three different channels if you said that you wanted to record it every time it was on... with only one set up. With the 721, I would have to search for 'Friends' and set up a recording for each time- once, daily, or weekly- it was on.
Save for the commercial-skip capabilities and the ease of setting up a recording, this really is the same as a VCR.
