I purchased a "matchstick" type natural roman shade and a solar roller shade from this company, and my overall experience was disappointing. The shipping was prompt, but there is no online tracking of your order. Also, I never received email confirmation of my order and had to call to confirm. The quality of the shades is OK, nothing special. I expected better, considering that the matchstick shade in particular was so expensive. My husband had difficulty in installing the matchstick shade because the window frame was too shallow. He had to add wood blocking to secure the shade.
On the upside, this company carries a wide variety of matchstick styles. I would highly recommend obtaining a sample prior to ordering-- just be advised that your sample may not match the final product exactly (see below for more). Also, I found that requested samples were frequently out of stock and unavailable.
Before purchasing, I obtained two samples (at different times) of the particular matchstick style/color-- "Shikoku Black". The availability of free samples is wonderful and critical; HOWEVER, when I received the actual roman shade, I saw immediately that it was a different color from the samples. You must be able to rely on samples to give you accurate color. Unfortunately, you can't rely on the matchstick samples from Smith and Noble.
The "Shikoku Black" sample had alternating greenish and tan reeds, but the actual shade had no green at all. I called S&N about this, and they said that the reeds used in the matchstick shade samples may not have fully dried out, and thus had a green cast. Although this explanation at first seems reasonable, it doesn't explain why my one-year old sample is still green. Still drying out??? I don't think so!
As for the roller solar shade, I felt that it was cut too narrow for the size of my window opening. Apparently this is standard procedure at S&N. The gap between the edge of the shade and the window frame is a little over half an inch on each side, and I feel that it is unattractive.
