You have to insert them positive end first, then negative end. Some rechargeables are actually a smidgen larger, most likely due to tolerances problems at the factory since so many batteries now are made in china where quality control is still substandard.

The reviewer gave me exactly the information I was looking for. I purchased unit secondhand & needed to know charge time and how to determine when charge was complete, since Rayovac.com does not provide this info. Now I know. I did not find it at all difficult, however, to insert the batteries, so this factor may be something that is overcome by continued use. Overall, I appreciate the information provided by this reviewer.
