V5 owners, take a look.May 25 '01 (Updated Apr 15 '02) Write an essay on this topic.
Popular Products in Graphics Cards
The Bottom Line It's a great graphics card and one of the only ones to offer the quality that the 3dfx 4x FSAA (Full-screen Anti-alias) that the v5 does.
I've had my VooDoo 5 5500 PCI since Christmas and, although 3dfx is now owned by nVidia, the circle of V5 supporters is big. The /first/ thing I suggest you do when you get your card, is to go to www.3dfx.com and get the 1.04.01 WHQL drivers (or Beta, I can't remember). Those will give you a significant increase in performance. Next I suggest you go to www.x3dfx.com and download their driver updates. :) I've also just installed the WickedGL Beta drivers (www.wicked3d.com), and those are fantastic. I suggest them! What people looking for a V5 as their next card should know is this: It's not the greatest card ever made. You -will-, however, get phenomenal graphics and wide support from most major game makers. It is a great card. I love mine. It works with just about every game I've tried, too. It gives phenomenal performance in Half-Life: CounterStrike and I forsee it working for me for quite a while. The problem with owning a V5 right now is that the company can no longer support it as the company is now under :). You're taking your chances, but there's enough support to keep this baby alive quite a while. -=-=- In the year or so since I first wrote this, I've become active in the community of people that still use 3dfx-based cards. I would not suggest that, if you have a 3dfx card, visit http://www.x3dfx.com - there you will find drivers as well as a wonderful community dedicated to helping you get the most of your card. |
