The three main different types of RPG gamers, a study.

The Bottom Line To choose what RPGs you want to play, you must first know what your preference is.

You know what is weird? The fact that for every product being rated on Epinions there is always a time in a review when you have to chose between recommending a product and not recommending a product, yet 'recommendation' can have various meanings. Let's say for instance that a person who reads horror books usually decides to review a romance novel. They don't like it and they don't recommend it, because it was a romance novel. But a fan of romance would recommend it. It is the same with RPGs, different people have different tastes even if it happens to be in the same genre. I have observed that there are 3 main different types of RPG gamers. This is mainly because two of my friends and I actually have different tastes in RPGs and I observed that the RPGs I like all have something in common, as well as theirs. And we generally look for different things in RPGs, these three types of RPG gamers are the casual, the hardcore, and the intellectual.

The casual gamer(represented by my friend Helena), is usually a newbie to RPGs, someone who doesn't play that much, or a person who is familiar with RPGs but they do not play them exclusively. Casual gamers tend to prefer games that are fun or games that have really good graphics. But some extremist casual gamers(like my friend) will not play an RPG unless it's graphics are up to par with the latest technology. For example, once when I went over to her house I brought along 4 RPGs that she hadn't played yet. They were FF7, Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Cross, and Xenogears. Once we went to her basement, I popped in FF7. We didn't even get through the first reactor when she told me to shut it off. Then when I put Valkyrie Profile in, we didn't even get to the first dungeon when she told me to shut it off again. When I showed her Chrono Cross, she seemed quite interested in the game, when I got bored of that, I shut it off. Then when I showed her Xenogears, she really liked the anime cutscenes. So I showed her a good portion of the game, but when I told her that we wouldn't be seeing anymore FMVs until the second disk, she told me to shut it off. Later, when I just beat FF9 I took it over there so that she could try it out. Unfortuntly, I had also brought with me a copy of "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" for her to read so she ended up reading it all the way through my 1.5 disk tour of FF9. She just occasionly lifted her nose from the book to see an FMV and always ended up asking "What's happening?".

You see what I mean? Not all casual gamers are like that, but they still mostly play for fun value and graphics in an RPG. If you find that you don't like complex stories or in-depth gameplay, then you are most likely a casual gamer and would prefer games like Final Fantasy 8, and Chrono Cross.

The hardcore gamer(represented by my friend Matt), is someone who knows a lot about all different types of games, but they like RPGs quite a bit. They play a great deal of RPGs, yet they do not play them exclusively. Hardcore gamers usually play games for challenge and gameplay. My friend Matt once said that he liked the Final Fantasy series, The Breath of Fire series, and The Legend of Dragoon the best out of all the RPGs that he has played. I asked him "What about Xenogears?", then he said "Well, I liked Xenogears, but there was too much talking". " I like games with a little bit of plot, but not too much plot so that you don't get any time to actually play the game".

As you can see, the hardcore gamer prefers games with a lot of action to games with a lot of plot. If you want to enjoy the game and level up endlessly so that you can get through a difficult game without many instances of various plot development in between, then you are probably a hardcore gamer. If you are a hardcore gamer, then try games like Valkyrie Profile, or one of the older Final Fantasys.

The intellectual gamer(represented by me), is a person who knows about RPGs mostly, and enjoys them very much. Intellectual gamers usually play mostly RPGs, or they play them exclusively. This reasoning mainly comes from the fact that intellectual gamers prefer games with very complex storylines and well developed characters. You can't get any of those things from any other genre of game. People who are intellectual gamers like to look at the game through a philisophical point of view, and view as much of the plot and character development as they can.

Intellectual gamers prefer games with not too much difficulty, and not too much gameplay hours, but with lots of plot. If you find that you always like a game if it has a complex plot and characters that grip you, and that you don't really give a hoot about gameplay depth or graphics then you are most likely an intellectual gamer. In that case, it is best to try out games like Xenogears, FF7, and FF9.

Wheter you are a casual gamer, a hardcore gamer, or an intellectual gamer you will always find RPGs that fit your gaming type, some more then others, but you will just have to go searching. Try to pay attention to reviews and determine for yourself whether the game has what you need in it. Just don't try and play an RPG that is way out of your type and expect it to be good. Sometimes a person will be a cross of two of the types of gamers(I'm personally a hardcore/intellectual, but the intellectual part is dominant), so they will like two types of games. But the bottom line is, "To choose what RPGs you want to play, you must first know what your preference is".
