If I ever become famous and have one of those fancy websites that's not got www.geocities.com in front of it or .tk at the end, here's what'll be at my pet peeves page:
Hypocrites
Nepotism
Snobs
Crappy Re-Makes
Unfabulous has just about everything there, except for hypocrites. Then again, the main character seems to have dominant style and music of Avril Lavigne, a total hypocrite. Why is Avril a hypocrite? After saying,
"I rejected some gorgeous publicity shots because they just didn't look like me. I won't wear skanky clothes that show off my booty, my belly or boobs. I have a great body"
She posed for Maxim. Now, I'll agree, she was attractive, but I couldn't get over the fact that she said that and then posed for Maxim.
But back to the review...
What is this show about? This girl by the name of Addie Singer who's just trying to get through 7th grade. How does she vent? Music. She picks up her acoustic and sings. Addie is described as having talent for her songs, and she strums simple chords and writes songs about various things. Shoes, babysitting, being depressed because of a cancelled party. Sounds really heart-wrenching.
Now, I have been described as judgemental. Ever since, oh 5th grade, I've been told I'm a judgemental person. I never got why, but now, I have aged, and I agree: I just might be the most judgemental person I know. But sometimes I'm right. Rarely, but in this case, yes. I am right. You see, it was a July morning. Sun was shining through the windows and I was with some friends. Together, we browsed a popular magazine by the name of J-14. Inside were two scrapbook-style pictures of upcoming shows on Nickelodeon. The first one looked okay (Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide - pretty good show), but the second wanted me to jump out the window that had all that sun. As far as I was concerned, there was nothing but darkness coming out of the article.
What was this article? Unfabulous. It showed this girl and her guitar, and all her interests. They were names (Addie S. A. Singer *haha!* Addie Singer-Bloom *2 names R cooL!* - from the article), songwriting, boys, and a quote that read, "I want to stand out without really standing out." That is the worst quote I have ever heard.
Then, my conscience reminded me of that guy who always called me judgemental. Well, I told my conscience, "Shut up, this time I'm right." And we bet $5, and I'd get the money if the show was awful. Let's just say I'm $5 richer now.
Who are the actors?
Emma Roberts: perhaps the most nauseating child star I've seen. She's the entire package of child-star-e-coli: no talent, no voice, hardly any emotion OR too much emotion, and the worst: her aunt. Her aunt is not Aunt Edna from down the street that thinks her little niece is so sweet starring on Unfabulous, she's JULIA ROBERTS. You heard me right. Nepotism. If she was a product on Epinions (Emma Roberts), I'd beg the category leads to let me rate her a negative 200. Emma plays the character of Addie, an equally nauseating character. I explained before, Addie loves to songwrite. Addie's style appears to be punkrawk, which is disgusting in itself, but to top that Addie's not exactly the kind of person I'd hang out with on Sunday.
Malese Jow? As far as I'm concerned she's flat-out average, and I prefer to think of her as a simple girl with friends who goes to my school. I don't want to see her on the big or small screen. She's got average acting, average emotion, average everything. Her character is Geena, a girl who apparently is comfortable with herself. Then again, her character is always seen trying to prevent Addie and Zach (see below) from making fools of themselves. Hmm... isn't "making fool" also being individual? Geena might be comfortable with herself, but not with those around her. I'd like to see Malese in school, but certainly not Geena.
Jordan Calloway is also average. He's basically a male Malese Jow. I'd actually like to see both of them in my school as average people. Perhaps in the same "group" or something. But not Emma Roberts. I'd like to not see her at all. But his acting is also very average. The character Zach he plays is described as too original, often censored by Addie. His character, too, is average. I see no good about him nor do I see bad.
So, when the day came, I watched Unfabulous, paper bag and trash can on hand. The theme song is an Angela Anaconda rip-off and the show is a Lizzie McGuire rip-off. Ironically, the show creator, Sue Rose, created Angela Anaconda. It shows Emma Roberts head-first in a bowl of punch at a party, seemingly mortified. Well, it seems Addie and I are different already; I'd be delighted if my head went into punch. That punch is now my punch, and I get my first free sip.
But back to the point, the show is an entire cliche. The characters are cliche. The advertising is cliche! The show seems to be the Nickelodeon re-make of everyone's favorite show, "Lizzie McGuire." Everything is similar, even down to the races of the characters. If people like this show, I'll be surprised.
As for the characters, they're unoriginal and poorly developed. I bet that same $5 that the producers were watching Lizzie McGuire and wrote down the character bios on paper, then changed the names. "Unique" lead female, science geek male friend, funky fashioned female friend, and the two rich-off-their-assets popular girls. You get the picture. I can't even see those same characters in school. In our school, the "popular" crowd doesn't possess a net worth past 8 digits.
How about those plots, eh? The first one was about a party. Oh, original. The second one was about friends lying to friends. Addie gets very, very mad when her friends reveal they lied about her eating a bug (which triggers me to think "Stifle yourself; people eat ants all the time.") and yet thinks there's nothing wrong with having notebooks of negative songs she's written about her friends. And this third one I haven't seen, but is about picture day and her flat hair insecurity. Her crowd gives off this false sense of being unaffected by peer pressure, yet Addie gets in this situation because Cranberry (popular girl) called her hair flat. The plots are also taken right out of a book, and maybe even trashed a little bit, as if the book was put in a backpack and kicked around all day.
Now, I've been spewing all this unoriginal nonsense, yet I never told you why it's so unoriginal. It's completely Lizzie McGuire-like, and has so many cliched characters and plots. It wouldn't surprise me if they did a "locked in the freezer" episode.
I can honestly say I hate everything about this show. Everything about it makes me mad: the characters, the actors, the plots, everything is so poorly developed, and it's being heavily pimped by Nickelodeon, moreso than that of it's better counterpart: Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. Ned's characters are somewhat well developed, and at least the plots include helpful tips on how to survive school. Unfabulous is also a guide: on how to induce vomiting.
