DVD is to VHS as Iceberg is to Titanic.

If this is the only Epinion you read on the merits of the DVD format, well then you're insane.

Great comparisons, Scott-- (Reply to this comment)

We're relatively new DVD Owners, and wouldn't go back if you paid us a thousand bucks. Thanks especially for your "DVD Glossary," I've been lazily wondering what "Anamorphic" meant since Christmas...

Also thanks for the Links--I'm thinking I'll find DVDPriceSearch and HomeTheaterForum most useful.

Great job, Scott!

Thank you Shannon! I did rent the DVD for The Abyss and it is indeed on my (rather long) list of DVDs to eventually own. My only digital expenditure for the next few weeks will be Close Encounters this Tuesday!

Glad you like the review! Always nice to hear from my favorite Epinionatorors.

Be well. Go Sixers.

Scott,

Nice writes here. I, like many people I suspect, waited as long as I possibly could to switch over (I can't tell you how pained I was to realize how much vampire stuff just ain't made it to DVD and probably won't) but it was well worth the jump.

I have to add a title to your list of beginning DVDs however. The Abyss (special edition, of course) has proven to be one of my most cherished DVDs and one that I find myself recommending to anyone looking to check out a DVD before they purchase it. Again, nice job here, I'll definitely bookmark it and use it as a reference when asked about the "big jump to DVD." :)

This review should be required reading for anyone considering buying a DVD player, as well as anyone looking for a laugh.

"The Thing" was the first DVD I ever bought, and I am in complete agreement with you on that one.

Hey Pam! No, I hold Excalibur in extremely high regard. I used that DVD title only because it's available very inexpensively. I was hoping that the low price of that particular title would be a counter-point to the ridiculousness of the security stickers.

All that for a lame little gag.

Anyway, thanks very much for your comments and I'm really glad you enjoyed this one!

Loved the humor in it. Oddly enough, I wrote a review of Excalibur the other day. I quite enjoyed it, actually. I noticed it was lumped in there with movies like Barb Wire and some other dreck. I hope you don't think Excaliber is at the same level as those!

Hye Jean!

Yes, just about every DVD movie is on the Widescreen format, yet several studios will also release "Fullscreen" versions of their more popular movies in an effort to appease the goofballs who simply MUST 'fill the whole screen'. (Like my mom!)

Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you liked this one!

Thanks Monte! It's funny: I DID have a small section here on Easter Eggs, but for some reason I edited it out. Probably wasn't 'funny' enough.

I'm glad you enoyed this one, buddy.

Hey thanks! I would have taken your advice and added some more Anamorphic stuff in as per your suggestion, but you just summed it up quite nicely.

And without all that silly "humor" stuff I keep throwing in!

Thanks for reading and thanks a lot for your comment!

Tell me something? Are most dvd's in widescreen? At the video store I belong to here, they have more of widescreen then anything...

Great Review, Scott! (Reply to this comment)

Of course, with me, you are preaching to the choir, but it was still well worth reading. I waited so long to convert from VHS because of my vast collection, but as soon as I did, I realized how much better the whole movie experience can be. Heck, there may even come a day when recording all of your favorite TV shows becomes obsolete. Personally, I cannot wait until The Simpsons make it to DVD. Oh -- the possibilities.

At any rate, your review is very thorough and helpful and I would only like to add one other little plus -- Easter Eggs. DVDs allow you to find those hidden treasures that are so cool -- like the Spider-Man outtake on the X-Men DVD, several minutes of bloopers on Magnolia and Boogie Nights, or M. Night Shyamalan's first horror movie on The Sixth Sense. Great stuff.

...with great humor. Anyway, one thing I think you may not have been clear on is Anamorphic video. You won't get any advantage from an anamorphic enhanced DVD if you're watching it on a standard 4:3 TV.

For that, you need either a 16:9 widescreen TV or a 4:3 TV with the 16:9 enhanced (or sometimes called Anamorphic squeeze) function. The benefit would be enhanced resolution.

Wow. I wrote this mainly for my Epinions friends, HTF compatriots and random wanderers to have a good giggle over. Halfway through writing it, I wondered if I could actually convert people! Your immediate response to my silly ravings has filled my heart to overflowing.

I feel faint.

Haha. Thanks very much for your kind words. I'm seriously happy that you liked it. Now go scour those sales ads and don't wait for Christmas! The Goonies comes out on DVD on August 21st. That's your deadline.

Be well. Go Sixers.

Your epinion is wonderfully entertaining. I have been debating about getting a DVD player for quite some time. Now, I have more information that tells me to run out and buy one! I probably will when a great deal comes up. Thank you for the great epinion.
