A previous reviewer had some issue with Dell Dimension computers...works great on my system. Whatever the problem was there...it is NOT the brand of computer.
Getting the camera working with the computer was a snap. The camera comes with a USB cable. Turn the camera off by closing the lens cover. Plug the wide end of the cable into the the computer USB port (at the small 3-prong fork symbol usually found on the back). Plug the smaller end of the cable into the camera (behind the door that covers the memory card). Open "Windows Explorer" or open "My Computer", wait about 3 seconds and a "Removable Disk" ('F:' on my system) will appear. This is the memory card in your camera.
If this procedure does not work, I would expect that there is a failure in either the cable, the camera USB port, the computer USB port. First, try a different USB cable...borrow the printer USB cable and check with that. Also, try the camera on a different computer. If things work on the other computer, then the first computer has a failed USB port; if things do not work on the second computer, then the camera has a failed USB port.
Copying from the camera memory to the computer is done the same way as any other file copy in Windows: click on the folder, drag and drop into the destination such at 'My Pictures'. Or, right click the camera folder, click "Copy", then right click on the 'My Pictures' folder, click "Paste". The camera folder will be copied to 'My Pictures'.
The camera folder is named F:\DCIM\100OLYMP and you will want to rename the folder in 'My Pictures' after copying it.
It is suggested to disconnect (unplug the cable) from the camera from the computer to minimize battery power consumption. Battery power is used to drive a signal to the computer and the energy required to do that is quite significant.
Important: The Stylus 400 is replaced by the 410 with an important new feature...the movies on 410 have sound; movies on 400 have no sound.
***
I bought this camera to replace my 35mm film camera. Began using this camera 9 months ago and have never touched the film camera since. With the film camera,
I used to get several good shots per roll; with the digital camera, I get loads of good shots, know what ones are lousy shots right away, and can re-take most shots to get the best frame and perspective.
Pleasant surprise: the movie mode works beautifully. I had no plan to use the movie feature when I bought the camera. Turns out this is a lot of fun. Used it to take ski movies, movies of fireworks, 360' room tours at a home I visited, movies of people running and playing. The movies are 17 seconds long and decent quality. The camera is capable of 2 movie modes: 70 seconds at lower quality; 17 seconds at higher quality. I use the higher quality.
Learning to navigate the menus will take some time to learn. I kept the book handy and experimented with features and modes.
Conclusion:
I would buy this camera again, and I would recommend it to friends...just get the one with movie sound: Stylus 410.

Amount Paid (US$): 350 This Camera is a Good Choice if You Want Something... Flexible Enough for Enthusiasts
