| newtownbeans's Full Review: Trend Micro PC-CILLIN INTERNET-SECURITY 2004 (pcci... |
I have been using Norton Internet Security for about six years and until I uninstalled it and installed Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2004, I always thought I had the best internet security software on my PC and the problems I was having with my computer were related to something else and not Norton.
I was wrong on both counts!
Because Norton was such a memory hog and because it was never really written to smoothly interface with other programs, I would get a lot of computer freezes and blue screens and boot problems. So I thought it was time to try something new.
As soon as I uninstalled Norton and installed PC-Cillin as my internet security software, I noticed a remarkable change in how my computer functions. No more freezes, blue screens and boot problems. Not only did I save about 80MB of space, and all of my other programs run smoothly, but the PC-Cillin program itself operates flawlessly.
Before I continue, a couple of notes about installing this utility. First of all, make sure you have uninstalled ALL files from Norton Internet Security before you proceed. There are a lot of files from Norton that like to hide in different areas of your hard drive, so you have to use the uninstall key in your Norton program that is on your start menu, then if you have Norton SystemWorks, use the uninstall program there and finally go to the install/uninstall area of your settings file from your start menu and search for any other files that might remain.
You can also delete all Norton files from the Program folder by double-clicking My Computer and then your data or "C" drive. Just be careful when deleting files from here if you still want to keep SystemWorks. Some of the files are used in both Internet Security & SystemWorks.
Once you have uninstalled Norton (or any other internet security you have on your computer) you can install PC-Cillin. The installation is a breeze. The interface is very easy to use. There is also a hard copy book that comes with the CD-ROM to help you install and understand the many features.
In addition to Real-Time Scan for detecting and scanning any file downloaded, copied or moved to your computer, this utility also has manual scan, scheduled scan and an Outbreak Warning System that proactively warns of virus outbreaks.
It also has a personal firewall, URL filters, privacy data settings, email scanning for incoming and outgoing email, spam blockers for email and an emergency lock to halt all internet traffic for virus outbreaks or intrusion attacks.
There are logs for all activity and they are easy to access and decipher. It also provides the ability to create rescue disks similar to what Norton provided. The only drawback I see with the rescue disks is that in order to update them with new pattern files, you have to create an entire new set each time. With Norton, you were able to update by just adding the new virus definitions.
Support seems to be very good. There are lots of FAQs and much support info on the website. I had occasion to email support with some questions and the response was the same day. There is also a toll-free number to talk to a rep. if you have a problem or question. With Norton, you had to pay for telephone support.
Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2003 was given great reviews by computer magazines, CNET, ZDNet, etc. and personal users have written glowing reviews on all of the major shopping sites such as Amazon, Buy.com, etc. I can see why. The 2004 version is just as good and maybe even a little better.
I paid $42. from Amazon.com for the CD-ROM etc. You may be able to find it even cheaper if you shop around. There is an annual subscription for the virus updates such as what Norton had, but it's worth it for an internet security program that REALLY works and is easy on your computer.
You can also get a trial version and try it out for 30 days if you are still skeptical. If you go this route, you'll probably buy it after using it the first day!
