This is a very nice dimmable fluorescent torchiere. It directs some light up but most seems to pass through the glass to provide direct light. When fully bright, it seems a bit too bright and is hard to look at. But it has a broad dimming range. When dimmed all the way down, it uses only about 10 watts while still putting out useful light. Unfortunately, as you dim it down, the light becomes more whitish (less warm).
Though this lamp will likely be more expensive than a halogen torchiere, it will pay for itself over and over again through energy cost savings. It will also produce a lot less heat, resulting in a cooler room or saved air conditioning expenses. The "bulb" is really two fluorescent circular tubes. This 58-watt 2C bulb lasts a very long time. But when you finally need one it may be hard to find at the local store. If you order a replacement bulb from the internet in advance, you will be prepared.
