Reliability is a problem (Reply to this comment)
by wlboyd
I agree with many of the comments on fit and trim. Power is not an issue and can be confused by the smoothness of the CVT. We've owned a 2005 Freestyle AWD SEL since May '05. My brother works at Ford in Michigan so we got employee pricing (big deal since Ford offered employee pricing to everyone two weeks after we purchased the vehicle.)
Since purchasing we've had this work performed by the dealer:
* Replace DVD player that had stopped working
* Repair 2nd row seat which stopped flipping up
* Check tire repeatedly losing air (later replaced after blowout near Bakersfield)
* Replace rear view mirror not switching to night mode
* Replace front windshield after broken while replacing rear view mirror
* Replace front windshield after putting the wrong windshield on (2005 model is different from '06)
Needless to say much of the reliability issue has been with the dealer, but the dealer wouldn't have been involved if there wasn't a reason to bring in the vehicle.
Mileage wise, we have been happy. Setting the cruise control to 65 and holding steady down I5 to LA we got better than 28 MPG. Overall, we are happy with the performance of the first year model; however, we are looking for another service option.

2006 Frod Freestyle/500 Limited (Reply to this comment)
by javo
I disagree with the under power of the Freestylte/500 3.0l CVT. It just seems that way with the CVT. We bought a 06 Freestyle AWD Limited in Feb 2006. Liked it so much bought a 06 500 AWD Limited in March 2006, Dealer loved us. I really do not see much difference in the dash between the too, except the analog clock in the 500 Limited. Somewhat nicer interior in the 500. We love both of the new cars, but still got the 7 year/100,000 mile Ext Warranty form Ford. Never had an AWD or CVT car before. We have had no problems with ever car, just did the first oil change on the Freestyle, 1500 miles on the 500. Did have the driver door keypad replaced on the Freestyle, after it was taken off in a car wash. No problems with the fit or finish on either car. But the wife still calls the Freestyle a "truck". It does look like an Explorer, and is classified by my state's DMV as a SUV. But I don't think it is a "Truck". These are my first Ford vehicles, and after owning Honda's for more then 20 years. Switch after both my 98 Acura CL 3.0 and Wife's 99 Honda Accord EXV6 3.0 needed new Auto Transmissions at 85,000 miles. Both cars had the same engine and transmission.

Re: mileage: We only have about 700 miles on the car, but a recent 200 mile trip of varied speed (50% highway, 50% local roads), the computer indicated 23.8 mpg. Not bad for a loaded up AWD, 3 row, not-yet-broken-in vehicle. I am cautiously optimistic about the future mileage. We have enjoyed this car a great deal so far.

TrueDelta only collects data on issues that occur after someone joins. Collecting data on past issues would bias the results.
Underpowered is relative. The average vehicle has gotten so powerful. But I'll grant that the Freestyle's performance is generally at least adequate.
An SRX has a much tighter, less versatile interior. I am, however, looking forward to seeing GM's new crossovers at the Auto Show next month. I suspect they're going to be too big and bulky for my taste, but we'll see.
I kept expecting to read a fuel economy figure in your comment. Have one to offer? Guess I'll have to wait for your full review. Looking forward to it.

It is very difficult these days to find a car-like, 6+ passenger, AWD vehicle with decent mileage. After a bit of research, we recently picked up a 2006 SEL AWD Freestyle which we have enjoyed more each time we get in it.
In the past we have owned Subarus, Toyotas and Jeeps, most recently a 2002 Outback which we have enjoyed except for Oxygen sensor problems (I intend to document this on truedelta.com). btw, I appreciate your efforts to document useful vehicle ratings. CR leaves a lot to be desired.
I agree with much of your review of the Freestyle except the "underpowered" con. This car was designed to mate a small engine with a CVT to achieve both mileage and power. We recently had a 200 mile trip with 2 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs and a bunch of luggage and had no trouble on hills, etc. I read a lot of initial Freestyle automag reviews noting how underpowered this car is but have been pleasantly surprised with its capability. Granted, it is a different sensation than a typical automatic transmission. The more I drive the CVT, the more I like it. This is not a sportswagon. Try the SRX if you want more power (and less gas mileage).
I will attempt at writing a review after I have put some mileage on the Freestyle.

Not being fair (Reply to this comment)

When you go to a car dealership do you tell the sales person that you are there to review the car for a web page or magazine? If not you are taking away a chance for him or her to make a living for there family. They only get paid when they sell a car, not spending hours with you. Go to general sales manager and tell him or her what you are up to, I'm sure they will help you. Bill [old salesman]
