Pros: Awesome GFs, Great FMVs, Acceptable battle system, superior graphics over VII, LION HEART!
Cons: Melodrama, Cheesy dialogue, and that crazy biatch Selphie
The Bottom Line: This game makes VII look like a 70-hour waste of my life. Looking around for frog testicles on the ground isn't fun, and that was the whole point of VII.

| swordofriva's Full Review: Final Fantasy VIII for PlayStation 1 |
My review title is a quote from Squall Leonhart, the protagonist for Final Fantasy VIII and by far the best RPG hero ever. I was actually influenced to act like him from time to time, especially when dealing with strangers or enemies. Squall's quote really does describe what I thought when I played VII, the steamy pile of unacceptable SHlT. This game kicks it's candy a$$ from hell to Houston, and here's why.
Graphics: 4 Stars (FFVII: 0 stars)
The graphics on this game are universes superior to VII, which always made the characters look like brightly colored balls of light. The battle system graphics look great, especially the weapons like LionHeart and Exeter, the latter of which reminds me of 70s muscle cars. The characters aren't superdeformed (a fancy word for "made in less than 30 seconds"), THANK GOD! and the world map is made more colorfully.
Sound: 3 stars (FFVII: 1/2 star)
The sound on this game could use a bit of work, but it's still 6x better than that of VII. The thing that needs work are the FX, which sound very unusual. Other than that, the scores for the battles and bosses are really captivating, and my favorite is Edea's theme, which combines creepy sounding violins and chellos with slights of almost every instrument imaginable to create a haunting sound, perhaps even better than the Sephiroth theme.
Gameplay: 4 1/2 stars (FFVII: 1 star)
The gameplay is where this game really shines. It's easy to get captivated by the battle system, and one of the GFs, Eden, almost commands you to use the Devour command to max out all your characters' stats. You have to draw spells from either enemies or from visible draw points across the world (even the world map). A wonderful battle system and Guardian Forces (the new Summons) top this off and make it soar over the abysmal VII, which forced you to look across the world for green frog testicles known as materia.
In the end, this game makes VII look like some terrible joke. It outperforms in every category, and truly is a must have for all RPG fans. Thank you for your patience.
