I have been trying to jazz up my profile with clickable links for forever and a day, and I've never been able to figure it out. Thanks to your review, I have!! :) I still don't have a pull-down menu, but my profile is a lot more interesting than it was! Thanks again -- and just for that, I'm adding you to my WOT!!!!

Thank You So Much For This Epinion!!! (Reply to this comment)
by pwe7
Thank you so much! After reading this epinion, I was finally able to get my picture on my profile page. It's too bad you couldn't have written the different help menus. Well I've got to notify some other members that have been having problems to read this. Thanks again!

I may bookmark this essay as a "Primer for HTML" to give to people who ask in other situations.

I completely agree that colored text and colored backgrounds should be used with caution. Too much can turn readers away.
Good advice.

You are welcome! I seem to be focused on writing member-focused editorials right now. My next one is on a few things new members might not know.
I do hope this was useful.

OMG (Reply to this comment)
by bperreault
I thought this was all a big secret that only long time members knew! Even Sue (yes, I am that mom) didn't tell me all the codes. Instead she just fixed my profile. It was all one big paragraph. Her comment?-I gave 5th Grade teachers a bad reputation.
I am printing this up pasting (literally) to my computer. I hope that is OK with you.
Colors? Definitely blue-my favorite.
Thank you so much.

My only problem with colors is that some people put their entire profile in pink or something, and then it's murder to read. Headache-inducing, in fact.

now you have to tell us how to install a button to rate this Beyond Extremely Helpful, which is the only proper designation for a posting like this. I printed a copy and will take some time this week to work on my page.
"Thanks" isn't really adequate either. Wow.
Best regards,

You're welcome. It can take a while to get the hang of HTML, but once a person understand a few concepts, the remaining concepts become easier.
Thanks for commenting.

Thanks for the comment and question. I've updated the review with the answer to your question.
Please note that in the review, it shows the picture code on three lines. Actually, there is only a single space between border="0" and src=. Similarly, you only need a single space between .jpg" and width=.
I hope that helps.

As a newbie to HTML (I'm pleased I've finally got the bold and italics stuff down as it is!), I found this editorial to be VERY HELPFUL!! But I have a question. How do you put photos in your profile (the biography area)? I've seen several but just haven't managed to learn how to do it myself.

"My big question, which is totally irrelevant to your review, is how you got Epinions to accept the angle brackets without either translating them into italics or bold or telling you that you are using unacceptable markup code? "
I had to hack into the Epinions source code to make it work. While I was there I gave myself a hefty income share for next month. ;-) Actually, the article that I referenced at the end was where I learned that XHTML codes could be used within Epinions.
"I guess school must be out for you. We have finals next week and then I'm off for the summer (yeah!)."
Yes, school is out and so I know have time for Epinions. This last semester was difficult and I had to quit Epinions for a few months. I am glad to return. I hope your semester ends well. :-)
Thanks for the comment.

Everything you need to know is here! (Reply to this comment)
by Dr_Steph
Bret, this is a GREAT resource for Epinions members who want to liven up their profile page a bit!
I found your editorial very easy to follow and learned some new information as well. For example, I didn't know you could just "name" a color for your font. I thought you had to use a "color code"
My big question, which is totally irrelevant to your review, is how you got Epinions to accept the angle brackets without either translating them into italics or bold or telling you that you are using unacceptable markup code?
You probably already explained that, too, but I might have missed it.
By the way, have I mentioned how nice it is to have you back at Epinions? :) I guess school must be out for you. We have finals next week and then I'm off for the summer (yeah!).

I'm not a computer novice but I have no clue about HTML. This explains things quite simply so, if I get a chance, I'll try this on MY currently boring profile page.
Thanks,
