"I Didn't Buy A Warranty and the Company Tried to Screw Me"

The Bottom Line Companies are more willing to give you good service if you have spent your money on their warranties.

I bought an Amana washing machine 3 1/2 years ago from Sears. When they asked me about an extended warranty, I said, "no". I was tired of being talked into buying these things and never needing them. After all, the washing machine had a 3 year warranty on it and I'd didn't have problems with my old machine, which lasted me 15 years.

Well, wouldn't you know it, 3 years and 2 months after purchasing the machine, it stopped working. One minute my machine was washing clothes, the next minute it smelled like my utility room was on fire. The machine smelled like smoke and wouldn't agitate. I called Sears and set up an appointment for them to look at it.

They came out 3 days later and charged me $60.00 to just look at the machine. They played around with it and told me that the motor was shot. They said it was too bad that I didn't buy an extended warranty, but since I didn't, it would cost at least another $400.00 to replace the motor and for the service. I was ticked. $460.00 for a machine that was 3 years old???? I told them to forget it. I would buy a new machine before I did that. It wouldn't pay to spend that type of money when I could get a decent machine for the same amount or even less.

So, I went out looking for machines, but I was still mad. I just couldn't understand how a machine that was three years old could have a broken motor. I finally decided to contact Amana and find out why this would occur. They were very helpful. They said that they would come out and look at the machine and not charge me for the service call. When they came out, they looked over the machine and finally found that it was the timer that wasn't working, not the motor. They replaced the timer for $85.00.

I was furious with Sears, especially when the Amana repair man told me that Sears had a talent of doing this. If you don't buy their machines or their warranty service, they don't like to come out and repair your machine. I would have either spent close to $500.00 in repairing a motor that didn't need it or buying a new machine. We contacted Sears and they finally agreed to reimburse us for the service call that they provided.

The bottom line - warranties will help provide you the service that you may need and the company may be more willing to help you if you have purchased their warranty. But watch out!!! Check out the information that they are telling you before having them repair something that doesn't need the service.
