Scary StuffMay 28 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line A good horror movie must have suspense. I can watch gore on ER, but to truly shock the crowd you need to surprise them when they least expect it! Though I'm a big boy now and don't get scared like I used too, I remember the movies that did scare me. Here are the scary movies fun for a dark rainy night, when noone is home. Remember blood and gore is not scare just anatomy. A real thriller comes from creative ideas. So I've listed the ones that did a good job making me jump! In no particular order: 1)JAWS - One of my all time favorite movies, and it was a thriller! Almost perfectly written and acted. A fun plot and ingenious direction. Well, did you expect anything different from Spielberg? This movie made people fear sharks. 2)The Shining - Great book and great decision to use Jack Nicklaus as the main character. The family alone in a huge motel isolated in the mountains during a snow blizzard. Who wouldn't go mad. 3)Friday the 13th (I) I can't believe my mom took me to see this when I was 10. What was she thinking. I remember, before I saw this movie, I was watching another movie at the same theater and went to get some popcorn. From behind the doors of Friday The 13th, the audience was screaming, every few minutes. You wouldn't believe how loud it was. So mom took me to see what the fuss was. And sleeping for several days afterwards became a problem. This is a classic thriller. A must see for those that haven't. 4)When A Stranger Calls - A great example of a super scary movie. Ideas in this movie are extremely frightening. Use caution, if your a babysitter. 5)The Hitcher - To tell you the truth I don't remember exact details of this movie. Perhaps I've decided to keep it tucked in subconsciously. This was a very scary movie though, about a serial killer hitchhicker, well casted. 6)Alien - A true Sci-fi classic. I great mixture of science fiction and horror. Excellent scary sequences and the right amount of gore make this a great movie. 7)Scream - This movie was good because it was hard at the time to make a current scary movie. Most of us are now descensitized and it takes some creative thinking to frighten us. This movie is original, fun, and scary. 8)Fatal Attraction - Brought horror films down to earth with a realistic setting. Marital affairs and obsession create this great movie that leaves you clinging to your seat. 9)What Lies Beneath - Another recent film that was able to achieve modern day suspense. Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfifer are together in this ghost story suspense thriller that everyone should see at least once. 10)Poltergiest - I love when Stephen Spielberg makes scary movies. This one was extremely good for scary movies. Using the supernatural to get inside the audiences head is very effective when done right. |
