GATEWAY TO THE JUNKYARD
May 28 '01 (Updated May 30 '01)
The Bottom Line I FEEL GATEWAY CUTS ALOT OF CORNERS,AND PUTS CHEAP PARTS IN THEIR COMPUTERS.I HATED COMPAQ ALSO,BUT I WOULD TAKE IT OVER A GATEWAY ANYDAY,THAT'S HOW CHEAP GATEWAY IS.
First off I had the Dell dimension 8100 1.5 computer, which I returned for the Dell dimension 8100 1.7.After I had this computer for about three weeks, and reading reviews and comments on all computers,I wanted to make sure I had a great computer. From what I had read, the Gateway select 1300 amd athlon system seemed to be the one to compete with the Dell.I ordered the gateway knowing I had thirty days to try it out.You have the same option with Dell,so I decided I would keep the better computer.
The Gateway took alot longer to receive than the Dell, but that was no big deal. When I received it I unpacked it,and checked it out.First off it was really cheap looking,it was really hard cheap plastic for the top and front. Then I took the side off to look inside, what a pain. They have a tools free entry, but you kill your fingers trying to open it,nothing compared to the ease of the Dell.now I had bought this computer loaded, but yet where was everything inside?,it was practically empty. The modem was a third the size of the Dell.there just didn't seem to be anywhere near the same amount of stuff inside as the Dell,it just seemed cheap.I had never even heard of the hard drive,I was hoping it would have been a maxtor,or a western digital, this was a noname.
I decided to hook it all up,and give it a trial run.It set up just as easily as the Dell.now I started it up,what a noisy unit. The hard drive was REALLY NOISY,AND DID NOT QUIT RUNNING.With the cheap hard drive, and the cheap plastic case,it was really annoying,so annoying that I wanted to kick the unit.Still I thought I would give it a shot. When it was dialing to get on the internet, the modem was slow, and the sound came out the main speakers, which I thought was cheap.the Gateway was actually slower on the internet than the Dell. The boston speakers were JUNK,I couldn't believe how bad they were, and the subwoofer was tiny.
By this time I couldn't take it any more,it was just to noisy, and driving me crazy.Gateway also doesn't give you the windows me cd,they have their own recovery cd's,which I don't like when company's do that.Dell doesn't do it that way,Dell gives you all the cd's you need, with drivers and software you might need later.
I packed it up and paid 110 dollars for shipping both ways, and sent it right back.Atleast now I can feel I made the right decision by sticking with Dell.
What I'm trying to say,is that Gateway seems to be the type of company that is in it for the quick buck.Your computer will probably breakdown just after the warranty expires, due to the cheap parts they use.It doesn't seem to be a very good company,if they don't even watch out for their customers,by giving them high quality parts.
I hope this helps you make an educated decision,on which computer company you might want to go with in the future.
