Sheep & Goats (Reply to this comment)
by captpackrat
Sheep make excellent lawn mowers. The Babydoll Southdown breed is especially suited for this role; they are very small (18 to 24 inches tall) and cute as can be. They require relatively little care, just a field of grass to eat, a supply of fresh water, a sheep mineral block, and an annual shearing (Southdowns produce exceptionally fine wool). They have very little odor (they smell faintly like green tea) and their poops are small, inoffensive (it's just grass, after all) and readily fall between the blades of grass, where they turn into natural fertilizer! If you go with sheep, you'll need more than one; they are highly social creatures and a lone sheep is a miserable sheep. They are relatively intelligent and can be leash trained.
Goats are extremely intelligent animals and can be trained to perform tricks or walk on a leash. They will eat a wider array of weeds than sheep will, but they'll also strip the leaves off the low-hanging branches of trees. They also have a gamier scent than sheep, especially the males. They love to climb and you shouldn't be surprised to find them on the roof at some point. Pygmy goats are extremely small (16 to 23 inches tall) and are well adapted for a small lawn. Aside from grass, they just need fresh water and a mineral block; unlike sheep they don't require shearing. Their poops are small like a sheep's, but have a stronger odor (still less offensive than, say, dog poop).
Sheep and goats get along marvelously and readily accept each other into their flock. Sheep are allergic to copper, unlike goats, so you have to make sure to only use mineral blocks and feed specifically designed for sheep.

You forgot Goats which are by far superior to the others you mentioned in the article. Having owned 2 of the little critters, I can attest to their mowing ability. When they finish with the grass they will then start on all the plants and even work their way through all the rubbish.

I'm a Goose-Loving Hippie From Way Back (Reply to this comment)
by Hard_To_Please
Soothsayer-
"Less than Very Helpful"?! You gotta be kidding- this was much more than Very Helpful, but I couldn't find such a rating so you'll have to settle for a simple VH.
Next week, the Missouri Department of Conservation is planning to round up hundreds of geese in two locations (an office park and a nature park)and slaughter them for food for the homeless. They have chosen next week for this 'project' since that's the estimated weeklong period when the geese are molting and cannot fly.
It's all very ironic since if a homeless person were to kill a goose, they would be arrested, but it's somehow okay when the agency in charge of protecting our wildlife does it.
I plan to lay in the grass smoking grass and disrupt the whole event by throwing cow patties at the 'hunters'!...Mark

Great article! (Reply to this comment)

But remember: hippies are people too. They are good for much more than wheat grass juice and lying about.
For example: selling jewelry, incense and trinkets at street fairs, playing bongos, and generally making the rest of us feel good about how productive we are in comparison to them!
Peace! 8-)

horses and small boys. Our herd of horses (yes, I've heard of horses) mows grass like a son of a __; and my 7 year old son has recently discovered chewing on grass stems.
Good eye opener for a psuedo-Monday morning : )

Looks like You had fun with this one!! (Reply to this comment)

Unfortunately for me, I have those communi err Commune-loving long haired folk all around me. They have not helped my lawn one damn bit!! That's right!! Not once!! Instead of taking care of my lawn, they decide to run for congress in my area!! That Zoe Lofgren is my congress representative, and I had the chance to meet her. I told her, she did not really have to pass all the foolish legislation she was doing, I just needed her to eat some grass and poo on my lawn once in a while. She didn't even eat the grass!! She just pooed on my porch. Geeez, you'd think she would at least put it in the right place!!
In Central Park, I never did see the swans you speak of. I did however see a homeless woman fertelizing the grass there. She just lifted her skirt in front of all, and proceeded to feed the lawn with much needed nutrients. it was a sight I will never forget. Great review!!

It's not just the old Hippies (Reply to this comment)
by marctasman
It's the young whippersnappers too. They love that grass. Wheat grass, that is. Improves all sorts of bodily functions.
Nice opinion.
