Oust Bathroom Air Sanitizer is a DUD

Written: Oct 08 '04
Pros:canister snaps easily into dispenser
Cons:hazards to humans & domestic animals/avoid contact with food and utensils.
The Bottom Line: Too many steps to follow to get this situated and then the mist is so faint there is no scent in the bathroom. This is a waste of time.

Over the last month or so the Vons grocery store here in Los Angeles sent out a flier that contained weekly coupons of ten dollars off purchases of $50.00 or more. During one of my shopping trips I actually saved $32.00 with a 52 savings. Within the flier were a few coupons that were on special products.

The coupon was marked FREE Oust Bathroom Air Sanitizer Refill. The entire shelf was empty, so other customers beat me to this bargain. I noted this particular coupon did not expire until November, so I checked for this product each trip to the store.

Finally the store was restocked with more of the Oust Bathroom Air Sanitizer Refill, Citrus Scent. The fine print on the coupon stated good for up to $4.09, but the product was selling for $4.79, which meant 60 cents out of my pocket.

Honestly I do not like the Oust spray in the Floral Scent that is in my bathroom. I prefer the Air Wick fresheners over the Glade, but I was intent on getting this item and frustrated over the sell-out that I made the purchase. I would not bother with this product without that incentive.

I did not really look at the product, but did note the white canister and refill dispenser in the clear bubble plastic packaging. Had I inspected this further I would have realized that this is a product you peel off and stick to a surface. For some reason I thought this was a plug-in type of air freshening unit.

Oust Bathroom Air Sanitizer Refill, Citrus Scent claims to kill odor-causing bacteria in the air, while the other leading brands just mask odors on a temporary basis. They advise on humidity in the room being between 45- 70%, closing windows, doors and air vents. For maximum results this should be very close to toilet. " Resume normal room ventilation after spray has settled".

The Oust Bathroom Air Sanitizer Refill, Citrus Scent is to be attached to a vertical space and not on wood surfaces, under cabinets, painted drywall, wallpaper, vinyl or plasterboard.

It is suggested to clean the desired surface area with rubbing alcohol and let it dry before peeling off the small paper adhesive. I do not have rubbing alcohol in my home so I passed over this step. The directions state to first attach the unit to the wall, hold it in place for thirty seconds and then insert the refill canister.

I found it easier to insert the refill into the dispenser and tested it out into the air a few times. It just so happened that we are taking Flonase and before inserting into our nostrils I do a test, so I followed suit with this product.

This worked fine while in my hand, but then did not stick to my wall for very long. The Oust Bathroom Air Sanitizer Refill, Citrus Scent is now residing on the side of the medicine cabinet. Since the dispenser is facing down with the mist aiming the air below, this should be placed at a higher leveled spot.

I really do not see how this could be close to a toilet when that is so low to the ground and you want to kill the germs in the air, not on the floor! I found it easy to open the dispenser and take out the canister to shake it and then insert it back in with a snap. There is a visible blue dot or point at the bottom of this, which is actually the tip, so to have this close to children would not be advisable, because it is very similar in size and color to a nightlight.

In fact this Oust Bathroom Air Sanitizer Refill, Citrus Scent measures one inch wide and three inches in height. I would prefer the canister to aim up instead of down. The design of this could have resembled a nightlight with the hole at the top similar to the bulb on a nightlight.

There is no evidence of a citrus scent at all in my bathroom. I can press on the unit lightly and it stays intact on the medicine cabinet, but only air is coming out, which you can tell by the faint hissing sound. I have placed my hand underneath and there is no wetness, but when I smell the palm of my hand there is a slight citrus scent, that is pleasant.

Perhaps I will now search for the Oust spray in the citrus scent, but to try to emit a blast of scent that would kill odors is not feasible with the Oust Bathroom Air Sanitizer Refill, Citrus Scent.

To remove the canister you pull down the dispenser and pull it out. Nothing will come out of this without being inside the canister. This is slim in design and mentions the active ingredient as Triethylene Glycol6.0%, Inert ingredients at 94.0%.

The contents is .40 ounces with the canister made in Thailand and the dispenser in USA. It does mention keep out of reach of children. I did not try placing this on the side of the toilet, and do not think it would stick.

The difficult part per the instructions is the removal of the canister from the wall. They want you to remove the canister from the dispenser, with one hand twist the dispenser left and right until adhesive is loosened. Lastly, pull the dispenser off the wall. There are some areas where this product can be recycled.

Even though this is entitled, Oust Bathroom Air Sanitizer Refill, Citrus Scent it is recommended to try it out first in one room for a 24-hour period before using throughout your home. I think they forgot to say not in the kitchen since this should not come in contact with food or utensils and it is called a Bathroom product.

This is also extremely flammable, so do not smoke as you squirt. The package also lists first aid directions if this gets in your eyes and mentions removing contac lenses. The contents are under pressure.

The product has too many issues to be effective and with the odd way the scent comes out it is not really effective. Besides the bathroom odors it is also supposedly good on mildew and pet odors.

For a room the size of 4 1/2 x 4 x 7 two sprays should suffice. I found that I could keep depressing on the dispenser with no results. It did not klunk out after repeated beatings and still stands in position, totally worthless in my bathroom. I had high hopes of misting the dirty laundry since it is directly below the area, but our clothing and bedding will not benefit from a citrus scent.
