| TOMRYN's Full Review: Verizon Mobile Phone Service in New York |
I signed on with Verizon Wireless after becoming dissatisfied with Cingular. There is very little I can say about my experience so far that would be negative.
In two years, I have never had a dropped call and the quality is only slightly less than that of a landline. All of the features have worked exactly like they are supposed to. Any questions or issues I have had, have been answered and resolved quickly, and the representatives have called to follow up to ensure issues are resolved. The representatives do not sound like they are reading from a card, and will admit when they do not know the answer to something and need to investigate.
Billing is simple, although the extra taxes, federal fees, and government surcharges seem a bit excessive. But I believe this would be applicable to any company. All included I pay approximately $58.00 a month with all taxes and fees included for free nights and weekends, and 300 free peak minutes. After the peak minutes are used, it is thirty-five cents a minute for peak usage. Other plans are available, but this is what I have.
Any time I have had problems with the phone itself, they have exchanged it within minutes for a new one of the same model with no questions asked.
Compared with other companies (Cingular excluded) I feel that Verizon is not the leading edge feature wise. Other companies have come out with features like walkie-talkie and camera email before Verizon, but when it comes to coverage area and solid service, it seems that Verizon excels. They have the resources of a big company, with the personal service of a smaller company.
I have a Palm Pilot Smartphone, which is a phone enabled personal data assistant. I can access the Internet through the phone itself, or plug the phone into my laptop computer for Internet access anywhere on the laptop. The connection speed seems slower than dialup. Internet access through the phone, or by connecting to a laptop is available for about $5.95 a month more. I find that I rarely use the Internet through the cell phone unless I am in a bind for directions or for finding a business address, or just bored with time to kill. Using the Internet through the phone itself is cumbersome and unintuitive, not to mention not very user friendly.
Verizon (like other cellular companies) now has text messaging where you can send short messages to other subscribers. Initially I found little use for this feature, but have started using it more frequently mostly to send witty one-liners to friends. Most people I know that use it also use it informally this way. With the palm pilot phone, it is easier than a standard phone to literally write in a message to send. With a standard phone, the process of inputting each letter is a bit more tedious. Verizon has packages where you can send messages back and forth for about $3.00 a month, or you can pay ten cents per outgoing text message or two cents per incoming message. You can also integrate text messaging with MSN to receive stock reports, weather, horoscopes, and a full palate of ridiculous information depending on your preferences. You can also check email through most services. The phone can also be used as a pager, but this feature seems redundant considering it is a phone.
Verizon seems to do exactly what it is supposed to do very well, and it is very low maintenance. Other than paying the bill, you don't have to think about it (and even then, you can have your payment automatically deducted). You can get all the bells and whistles if you want to, maybe not before everyone else, but the reliability and predictability of service more than makes up for waiting a little longer for features to become available.
Everyone I know that has Verizon (and the list keeps growing) is completely happy with it. Many of them have moved to Verizon from other companies that had spotty service, and bad customer service.
