Re: Dog odors (Reply to this comment)

We actually ended up ripping out the old carpet and putting in new carpet. The Oust really DID help before the new carpet was installed.
Thanks for r/r/c!

Dog odors (Reply to this comment)
by gardenwife
The only way to permanently get rid of pet odors is to use an enzymatic product such as the one mentioned, Nature's Miracle. We used that when our two cats urinated on our mattress a few years back (we'd accidently closed them out of their litterbox area for a day -- and they let us know!). Unlike air fresheners, which only mask odors or coat the inside of your nose with the scent so you don't notice it, enzymes consume the bacteria which cause the odors in the first place. Odors don't just float around in the air; they originate from somewhere, you know? You have to treat the source of the odors. Hope that helps! :)

It smells MUCH better now! We have a new carpet in, lots of scented candles, and Oust Air Sanitizer. I'm actually working on a review for that right now!
Love,

you poor thing! I lived in an apartment when the women before had a cat and all you could smell was pee EKK,. We had to pull all the rugs up and toss them. Hope your home is smelling sweeter and you still don't need barf bags when people come over to visit.

Ugh! I don't want to even think about what is inside the air ducts and coils. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I think I will do that.
As for the Ionic Breeze, Craig is already looking into that!

Hi ya Dice Lady, (Reply to this comment)

You might think about investing in an Ozone emitter like the Ionic Breeze, Also replace your A/C filter and have the Coils cleaned by a qualified professional. These things collect a bunch of gunk over the years and sounds like the previous residents are not the type to look after such things, if they never took the dog out then likely they never maintained the A/C system. For the Hard Wood Floors if there are no dark stains then they should be ok, at worst you may have to put a sealer on them such as a polyurethane this will basically make the hard wood water proof too so it is well worth it. Depending on the number of coats applied you will have to redo this ever few years but it's not that tough a job.
Good luck with your new home and may it bring you and Craig much happiness over the years you spend there.

Hmmm.. (Reply to this comment)

This isn't the usual category I rate in, but I ran across this and had to drop rating and a comment. This is easily one of the most thorough product reviews I've seen; very well done.
Also, I particularly liked this; "This can is also virtually indestructable. I wanted to see how well it held up after I finished the product, so I dropped the can from shoulder height. It didn't break. Then, I dropped it from the top of the stairs. It still didn't break. Finally, I went outside and threw it as hard as I could to the pavement. Guess what? It still didn't break."
This sounds like something I do, purely for entertainment purposes...on my budget, you have to make your own fun. :)
Nice job!

UGH! I never thought about that with the hardwood floors!!!! Shoot. Thanks for the warning.
AS for the carpeting, I will keep Nature's Miracle in mind. I have never heard of that before. We're actually having the carpeting removed and getting new installed tomorrow through Empire. Costs a bundle, but worth it.
Thanks for the tips. I do appreciate it.

To get rid of dog smell... (Reply to this comment)

If it's been around that long, you're definitely going to have to replace the carpeting and the padding beneath it.
Depending on whether or not the dog laid around on the hardwood or "did it's business" there too, you may also have to replace the hardwood too. It's not cheap but the odors seep down between the pieces of wood. You could possibly sand down and seal which may help but it's not guaranteed.
In the meantime, for the carpeted areas, try Natures Miracle. You can find it at Petsmart and Petco and other pet supermarkets. It unfortunately makes things a little worse in the short term as it draws out the odors but removes odors in the longterm. I've had excellent results with it.
Good luck.

Hey, Mom4K-
Thanks for reading & commenting. I'm glad that I made you smile. I'm not hiring my own contractors... I'm actually doing all of the work myself! Family members are helping here and there, of course, but we couldn't deal with the contractor drama that i know you are going through. Good luck!

And right now a need a spray to eliminate my contractor!!! Sorry about the smell, but thanks for the enjoyable read! Your style made me smile, something I haven't done in a week as my own homeowner horror story continues to progress.
When I have time I would like to read more of your reviews.

To Terminate Your Hellish Hound Smell... (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
...perhaps, you need an exorcist!!!
I thought the old homes out your way were supposed to be haunted by ghosts and not doggie smells!
Here's an idea for a play for you--(never mind! I'll e-mail the idea to you so you can work with it first, because you deserve to have dibs on it after all of that)!!!
One more thing...what does Kiwi think of the smell?
She probably thinks that you-know-who has returned!
Hope it's easier to divorce yourself from the smell than it was to divorce yourself from the stinker!!!
Cheers!
