The first time I drove the 5th generation Camry was shortly after its release in 2002. It was a rental car with about 16 miles on odometer and I had a 75 mile drive on mountain roads to test it out.
I was immediately impressed with the interior room. Spacious for any car, impressive for a car in Camry's size class. The next thing that captured my attention was the quality of the cloth upholstery, featuring a tight weave akin to a 300 thread count linen. Then, there was the improved power of the 4 cylinder engine, a vast improvement over the previous 4 cyl Camry's I had driven over the years.
The car's handling was okay, about what I expected, returning a good feel for the road coupled with a smooth, quiet ride. By the time I turned the Camry back in, I knew that someday I would have to have one and that day arrived last week with my purchase of a 2005 LE model.
In a world where one can literally pick from dozens of models/nameplates, the Camry stands a little taller than the rest because when all elements are combined: Ride, quality, power, roominess, tactile feel, comfort, and handling, no one car does everything better than this car.
