It was rather tedious at times. Not bad, by far, though.

Thanks!

I knew there was a relationship between the men for American Graffiti to be made, but I didn't realize the closeness involved. I didn't know that Lucas was so involved int he founding of American Zoetrope until I saw the history here. It was quite interesting.

I can't say the movie moved me to the point that I would seek it out again. Is it worth viewing once? Yes, in my opinion.

THX-1138 is.... (Reply to this comment)

....the one Lucas film I have never really wanted to watch. In my youth (yes, I had one) during the post-Star Wars awareness of George Lucas' "directorial vision," I attempted to watch it on TV when it aired and was bored to death.

I dunno...I'm just not into "hard" science fiction all that much.

You didn't know Lucas and Coppola were friends? Not only did they co-found American Zoetrope in the late 1960s, but FFC co-produced American Grafitti in 1972. They fell out professionally over, of all things, Apocalypse Now, which Lucas had helped develop and also wanted to direct. But filming Star Wars prevented him from helming Apocalypse Now; Coppola wanted it done by a certain date, and Lucas just couldn't meet the deadline because Star Wars was running behind schedule. So FFC took the helm and made the film without Lucas.

And incidentally, THX 1138 lives on in many Lucas films. AmGraf has a license plate with THX 138. Luke tries to bluff his way past an Imperial officer by claiming Chewie is being transferred from Cell Block 1138....

He was really kooky here. Didn't know what to make of him at all for a good part of the film.

Thanks for the comment!

I think at the point in time this movie was made "being reduced to a mere number" rather than retaining one's personality and individuality was a big fear. In some ways that is happening now - the media has numbed us to casualty reports and mourning for victims of disasters around the world. We hear the number but don't feel the personal impact or tragedy.

Thanks for the comment!

this was the first time I was aware of Donald Pleasance . . . and he was suitably scary. Nice review.

I do find it odd, the way movies assume that a number makes you less "individual". I have a name, Brian Block: several hundred other people in the world have the same name. I have a Social Security Number, too, and i have that _all by myself_. It's like going on line and seeing all the people who make themselves unique by becoming "Speeddemon531" or "Andym173". If i was in charge of de-invidivualizing everyone, i'd get rid of their last names and numbers both; then i'd issue an Approved List of first names, and let them deal with knowing 35 people named "Matt".

But then, that finished, i would give'em all Ridalyn, so maybe Lucas was onto something. Intriguing review!

cheers,
- Brian
