May 30 '01

The Bottom Line If you can afford just one image-capture device, make it a flatbed scanner.

Why a Scanner?
Turn shoeboxes and shoeboxes that are fulled with photos into on CD ( have to have a burner).Get copies without investing in a photocopier, and Send pictures of your kids to their grandparents via e-mail. Before you start cutting, resize, rotate pictures with your PC, don't you need a way to get them onto your hard drive. You have some options, from digital cameras to video capture, but by far the most cost-effective capture device you can have is a flatbed scanner. Unlike digital camera's, a scanner captures high quality images. You'll pay up to $600 or more for a great digital camera. For a 3/4 of the price, you can get a flatbed scanner that produces better resolution. As you may know that a digital camera can't capture all the photos that you have of you family.

What to Look For

Scanner Type. Flatbeds are the most common type of scanner, because you can scan pictures from books and magazines, photographs and other graphics.

Resolution. A scanner's resolution determines by dot pitch. The more dots pitch, the greater the capture detail.

Color Depth. The number of bits a scanner uses to define the pictures. In today times most scanners use either 30 or 42 bits. Don't settle for less than 30-bit color.

Interface. Many of scanners share the parallel port, USB ports and a few come with a SCSI board you have to install inside your computer.

Software. All flatbed scanners come with software that include scanner control, image editing, and OCR software that converts a printed page into a text file.

Price. The scanners ranged from $39 to $229, though by the time you read this, you'll find prices have dropped even more. Don't spend more than $200 for a flatbed scanner for your home it not worth it. some time the one the cost the less works the best.
