I purchased the 2004 MDX Touring with Navigation & DVD Entertainment
While researching SUV's I considered the BMW X5, Lexus GX470, Volvo XC90, and the MDX's sister, the Honda Pilot. I desired a third row seat so the X5 was out. The Lexus 3rd row is ridiculously small and folds up which makes the cargo space very narrow. The GX470 was more luxurious but didn't handle as well and was over $10k more with comparable options. The XC90 did nothing for me. The Pilot is a nice family SUV. The 3rd row seat was larger than the MDX and it's around $9k cheaper with similar options. The Pilot is a great value and was my choice until I drove the MDX.
I chose the MDX over the Pilot. It handles better, it's quicker, the interior is much nicer, it is quieter, and it feels more luxurious. If you're looking for a luxury family SUV I don't think you'll find a better all around choice for around $40,000.
Handling and acceleration is excellent for a 4500 pound SUV. I average around 20 mpg on the highway and 14 mpg in the city. The third row seat is great for children and adults will be fine back there for short rides. However, it is difficult to get in and out of the 3rd row. The navigation with voice recognition is very helpful and the DVD entertainment system is awesome. Rain sensing wipers are also pretty cool.
I feel very safe in this vehicle. The AWD system is very smart. Normally it's FWD, but when the system feels it needs to it will transfer power to all 4 wheels. Some safety features worth mentioning: vehicle stability traction control system, a tire pressure monitor system, side curtain airbags for the 2nd & 3rd rows, and a rear view camera.
If you are looking for a safe, fun-to-drive, family SUV at a great value, then test drive the MDX. You will not be disappointed.
