I would never put grounds down a drain without a disposal. I would also never put coffee grounds down the disposal in a house that already had slow drains or a septic system. However, a number of disposal manufacturers actually recommend using coffee grounds to keep the disposal mechanism clean (the grounds act as an abrasive) and if you have otherwise free-flowing drains, coffee grounds should not cause a problem.

Thanks for the advice - we don't do coffee grounds but I appreciate the heads up!

Just thought I'd let you know why you don't put coffee grounds in a disposal or down a drain. They can float on top of water sitting in a drain and clog it the same way hair does. Never, never put coffee grounds in any drain, disposal or no disposal!

Excellent review. I especially appreciated the Outdoor Q/A link.

I didn't see what you paid for the 555ss.

Thank you,

Coffee grounds are one of the few things we DON'T put in here. I read something about them being bad for the sewer system - not sure why.

That is a powerful disposal!

For me, one of the big things about having a disposal is the ability to get rid of coffee grounds - filter and all. At one time we were renting a house with an old, fairly useless disposal and I missed being able to get rid of messy, wet coffee grounds even more than being able to rinse plates into the sink without scraping them first.
