My "stranded on an island with nothing to do" top 10 album list

The Bottom Line More or less : Don't leave home without them.

Let’s say I set sail aboard this tiny ship. Let’s say the weather started getting rough and the tiny ship was tossed. Let’s say the ship set ground on the shore of an uncharted isle. Let’s say I only had my ten favorite albums (or cds, in this case) to listen to until I was rescued. What would those ten be? Well, just sit right back and I’ll tell you.

[10.] Patsy Cline ; Greatest Hits
I’m not a huge country music fan, but Patsy Cline had the most beautiful voice and I could listen to her sing at any time. I could go for walks along the shore listening to Walking After Midnight and silently go insane listening to Crazy and I Fall to Pieces. There’d be no better way to go.

[9.] Van Morrison ; Tupelo Honey
I fell in love with Van Morrison when I heard the song Brown-Eyed Girl. While that song is not on this cd, I would still chose this cd because of works such as Tupelo Honey, Wild Night, and When That Evening Sun Goes Down. It could be my “cheering up” cd because I can’t help but smile each and every time I listen to this cd.

[8.] Santana ; Supernatural
How could this not be on everyone’s top ten list? I mean, come on. Carlos Santana rocks, literally. With this cd you not only get to listen to the exceptional guitar work of Carlos Santana. There’s the hit song Smooth featuring the talented Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20. There’s Love of my Life featuring Dave Matthews. And then there’s The Calling featuring one of my all time favorite musicians, Eric Clapton. This one is most definitely sure to make it to the stranded isle with me.

[7.] Diana Krall ; When I look in your eyes
This is a fairly new addiction of mine. If you haven’t listened to Diana Krall sing and play the piano, you are missing something wonderful. She has a soothing voice and can play the piano like it’s going out of style. I love each and every song on this cd. My favorites are When I Look in Your Eyes, Popsicle Toes, East of the Sun (and West of the Moon), and Do It Again.

[6.] B.B. King ; Deuces Wild
As if B.B. King isn’t wonderful enough on his own, this cd combines the talent of Mr. King himself with many other wonderful musicians singing all the favorite B.B. King tunes. There’s The Thrill is Gone featuring Tracy Chapman, Rock Me Baby featuring Eric Clapton (yes, again), If You Love Me featuring Van Morrison (yes, again) just to name a few. This is probably one of my favorite collaboration albums ever.

[5.] Dr. John ; The Ultimate Dr. John
Where do I start with Dr. John? He’s fabulous. Known for his Creole-Cajun sound and his raspy voice that takes you directly to the swamps of Louisiana, Dr. John is the “ultimate”. All songs contained in this album will have you up and dancing if you have any hearing whatsoever. You just can’t help but tap your toes and move your butt to the sounds of tunes such as Iko, Iko, Right Place, Wrong Time, Such A Night, and Let the Good Times Roll.

[4.] Creed ; Human Clay
I know that a lot of people dislike Creed. That’s fine with me. This is my list. Go make your own if you don’t like it. I happen to be a huge fan of this album and carry it around with me wherever I go. I love the sounds of With Arms Wide Open and Higher. While at times I think the “heavy metal” sound is a bit much, I can still appreciate the whole band and the words contained within the songs.

[3.] Various Artists ; My Best Friend’s Wedding Soundtrack
You didn’t think I’d make it through this list without a soundtrack, did you? I admit this is my favorite soundtrack of all time. And why wouldn’t it be? Not only was the movie great. The music was great with songs such as I Say A Little Prayer by Diana King, You Don’t Know Me by Jann Arden, The Way You Look Tonight by Tony Bennett, and Wishing and Hoping by Ani Difranco just to name a few. Yes, the romantic in me is starting to surface now isn’t it?

[2.] Eric Clapton ; Unplugged
Yes, I said Eric Clapton. I know he’s already listed above but I could never get enough of Eric Clapton. Never. Ever. This album was recorded live and has all of my all time favorite Clapton tunes such as Layla, Tears in Heaven, Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out, Running on Faith, Malted Milk, and Alberta. Considering I’ve been to see him in concert twice (the most recent being just a few days ago), I think it would be a grave mistake to leave him out of the top ten. This man can play the guitar and play it good. He is absolutely a master at the art of music and a welcome addition to any collection.

[1.] Various Artists ; Louisiana Spice
My husband brought this album into my life when I married him. He took me to New Orleans for our honeymoon. He is solely responsible for my total love and devotion to Cajun/Zydeco music. And this album encompasses the best of this genre. It comes with a “city disk” that contains more of the jazzy sounding tunes like Mardi Gras in New Orleans by Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Hold On To God’s Unchanging Hand by Irma Thomas. It also comes with a “country disk” that contains more of the old time cajun/zydeco sounds in tunes like Lula Lula Don’t You go to Bingo by Boozoo Chavis and, my favorite of them all, Give Him Cornbread by Beau Jocque and the Zydeco Hi-Rollers. Granted, many of the songs are sung in the Cajun/French language and I don’t understand one word they are saying. But the sound and feelings that are behind the music keep me coming back to listen to this album over and over again.
