The second major decision you will make for your son. The first one was giving him the gift of his name.

I don't understand beans about any of this stuff. Personally, I highly agree with reason three, that would be VERY awkward to see.

Now I'm only 16, but in my opinion, the male sexual organ (PENIS!!! -giggle giggle-) is actually pretty ugly. It really is. I think circumcision is definitely a good idea. As for cleanliness and 'aiming' hey, same thing with hair isn't it? The longer your hair is, the harder it is to keep clean and work with. The longer your penis is.... well, you make the connection. But on the other hand, a lot of people like their hair long, there, that's the second connection for you to make.

I have added an update to the information about retraction. However, all of the people out there reading need to remember that they should seek their pediatrician's advice as to the best way to handle this situation. Performing anything such as this to a child based on such little information would be stupid.

My rating is based on misinformation. The absolute WORST thing a parent of an intact male child can do is retract the foreskin! That action can cause tears which could get infected! An intact baby boy must be left alone and there will be no problem whatsoever! The foreskin is NOT meant to retract in infancy! That doesn't happen for several years and sometimes not until the teen years. Whenever it happens, it's normal, but it should NEVER be forced by ANYONE! NOT PARENT, NOT DOCTOR! Oh, intact boys also pee in a nice straight stream going down. I was never peed on by my son! PLEASE fix this misinformation. What you've written here could be very damaging to a poor innocent baby if anyone takes this to heart!

Yep, We were told the same with our son (also an Alex). They don't recommend retracting it anymore because that causes tears. Ouch!

Here I am replying to a reply (okay, now this is getting silly!)... we were instructed to leave the foreskin alone; it will retract on its own eventually, usually sometime after one year of age. After it retracts, you are right - you do need to clean with soap and water, just like the rest of your body. Sometimes it is hard to know what is going on with this issue, as some pediatricians are "old school," and the advice your friends are getting is "old school advice." Sometimes that can cause trouble (as with some formerly standard medical interventions during labor).

I have to say, if I didn't before, that I really think your title is hilarious!

Very interesting, and thank you. I don't know too much about this, but several friends of mine were instructed by their pediatricians to gently pull back that foreskin when the baby was an infant ( a little bit at a time). I can't say too much more, since I am not on this side of the debate. Thank you for posing a very important point. Hopefully all that read this will ask their pediatrician about what needs to be done.

I enjoyed reading your cutting review (okay, I'll stop now).

One thing: as the parent of an UN-circumsized boy, I have to warn you that you should not retract the foreskin until it begins to do so naturally. Alex will be 3 next week, his is not yet retracting, and that is just fine (as per several doctors and numerous books). Retracting before they are ready can cause serious problems.

I enjoyed your editorial. Thanks!

which decision came first? (Reply to this comment)

Actually, I have three boys and the decision to circumcize was made well before their names were picked out.

Cute article.

My husband wrote about this topic too (kurt_g) and his take is obviously different than yours.
It all boils down to personal choice. I enjoy reading everyone's reasoning - some of them are quite unique.

Your title hooked me. I have no kids and I probably won't, but for some reason, I was still completely engrossed with your essay. (I won't tell my husband or he might start to worry!) Hehehe.

Good essay.
